| Fill me in. I know nothing about them. How do the compare against stainless steel barrels? Accuracy? What currently produced firearms use Chrome moly barrels? Pros and Cons? |
|
There are three types of barrels. The first is a chrome moly steel barrel, The second is a Stanless steel barrel, and the third is a chrome moly barrel, that is chrome plated/lined in the bore and chamber. In regards to wear, is goes in the order listed above, but in regards to match shooting, the chrome lining can leave high/low spots in the lands/grooves, with the SS being the better choice. What it comes down to is what kind of shooting you will be doing. When you heat up a barrel, the rifling of the barrel plasma cuts from the fired round at a faster rate than if the barrel is not blistering hot. If you plan on doing a lot of shooting where you will be overheating the barrel, then the Chrome lined barrel is the best choice. |

Agree with Dano, but I have to add. The longevity of stainless is only slightly longer compared to a good chrome moly. In my opinion, don't choose stainless over standard chrome moly for the sake of wear factors. Another point is the corrosion protection. Standard chrome moly, while the outside should not rust from the protective coating, the bore can. A chrome lined however, the bore will not. Stainless will not rust either. Just a couple more factors you might want to look at. I recently bought a varminter with a chrome lined national match barrel in place of the non-chrome lined varminter barrel. It is true, chrome lined barrels are generally rated not as accurate as standard barrels due to inconsistance coating. But in many cases, it is said that the effect of chrome on accuracy is minimal if not somewhat of a myth. A GOOD barrel chrome lined will still shoot straight. I have to admit, I just bought mine, so I have no results of my own to share. Although so far, it's looking promising. Gundraw |

I've got a question to add. Do chrome lined barrels see an above average increase in accuracy as they are shot more and more compared to non-chrome lined barrels? It would seem that normal barrel wear would eventually smooth out the inconsistencies of the plating. Is this true? |
No, because chromium is highly wear resistant. It takes longer to achieve the same amount of wear on a chrome-lined barrel than it does a non chrome-lined barrel. |
