How do you tell if an M1A mag has been modified for the AR-10?  There's someone with a box of mixed mags and I'd like to pick up some AR-10 mags for a friend of mine that has one.

Thanks,

Steve

There will be a square hole in the left side of the mag body for the mag catch, and a square notch at the top of the rear spine for the bolt stop.  It will have a plastic follower with a metal plunger that sticks out of the slot, which is what actually trips the bolt stop when the mag is empty.

For more info, Armalite has info in their FAQ on their website, and there are many AR10 mag threads in the Armalite forum (on the Industry page).

Got a really FNG question:  will M14 that have been converted for use in a AR10 still function in the M14?  Any drawbacks?

I've already got the M14 with mags, now I'm wondering if I buy the AR10 the same mags can be modified to work in both rifles.

As long as the lug in the rear is retained, then yes.  My older factory AR10 10-round mags had no lug.  My 20-round conversions have a lug, and would work fine in an M14/M1A.
