I recently bought a Yugo M-48 and I was wondering about how to get the cleaning rod out?

I can unscrew a section of it that is only about a foot long, but can't remove the other part that must be lodged in there. I have tried using brute force to rip it out, but it isn't working.  Is there any special button that I am missing that needs to be pressed to release the cleaning rod?

Thanks

OK, I don't know much about this particular variant, but I have a little general Mauser knowledge.

Barring another, authoritative answer, do this:

Dis-assemble the rifle, specifically removing the barreled action from the rifle.
Take the cleaning rod section that you've unscrewed and place it alongside the fore end of the stock.
What you are looking for is a metal boss that is pressed into the wood of the stock, and into which the cleaning rod is screwed.  Compare where that boss is located with the position of the thread on the cleaning rod section when it's in position.
My guess is that they will match up, and your cleaning rod was meant to be used with fellow soldiers' rods to clean the rifle.
Good luck, and please don't force anything!

I have a Turk mauser and it just unscrewed, not sure about a Yugo though, although Im sure someone will be around shortly with an answer.

There is definately enough room for a full-length cleaning rod, so I don't think they would need two soldier's rifles to clean one.

Of course that could explain why I can only get one section of cleaning rod out--there only is one.

Thanks for the help raf.

How long is the cleaning rod that unscrewed?

Its about the same length as the barrel, maybe a touch shorter, not sure on exactly length (Im at college and its sitting in a safe at home). The Turk mauser is a long, long gun.

Nearly all Carbine length 98 Mausers including the yugo 48 have 12-14" cleaning rods so you need 3 rifles to make a complete GI cleaning rod when you have a cleaning party ..They screw together to make a complete rod ..

Damn, that sucks.  Thanks for the help...I would still be trying to get the thing out a year from now otherwise.
