Thanks a lot M4. From what I gather it must eject the empties down through the mag well. Let me know if I'm right please. Thanks in advance.

since it doesn't use detachable magazines are other "evil features" ok to have?

two points:

1- A belt-feed counts (per the ATF) as a detachable magazine for AW purposes.

2- you can still use mags with it.

Shrike has a detachable barrel, because it also can use the M16 magazine, it is not an FFL item. It will come in preban and post ban configs. The barrel for all versions is 16" for now, and later accessory barrels will be in shorter or longer lengths.  Chrome lined barrels will be an option later. It ejects empties to the right like an M60, and the links out a link chute.  The mag well holds either an M16 mag when using the mag, or an accessory to attach an M249 ammo box, ot a tripod adapter.

I wonder if this will replace the M249 SAW sometime? It would consolidate an armorers parts count.

The ARES site links to an article about what some SOCOM brass thought about the system.  They quoted some big wig as saying that the system would be better than the SAW in MOUT because it offers the same firepower in a lighter, more compact package.  He said right now they do use the SAW in room clearing drills but it is heavy and bulky.  On the other hand the massive firepower of a 200 round belt is a vital asset in an urban setting.

The vids on the site make it look very good.  I like the rate of fire with an registered/military lower, not too fast, not too slow.

This item might just make me sell a bunch of guns to buy an auto sear!

I  can't justify putting one on a semi-auto.

faldoc:  the video makes it look lightweight AND controllable, watch the muzzle climb or lack thereof as he rips off the entire belt... I mean, that guy isn't using great posture and he doesn't look like he's exercised much in the past 30 years or so, but the gun just sits there and rattles away, steady.  I'm very impressed, if it passes muster on reliability hopefully the military will buy some.
