I'm seriously thinking about getting a Gemtech Outback for a Ruger MKII and 10/22.  How quiet are these?  Are they "Hollywood quiet" with the MKII and subsonics?

Gem-Tech products are among the best available.  And, yes, with subsonic ammo, it will be Hollywood quiet.  You'll hear a double click of hammer hitting firing-pin and firing-pin hitting primer.  Then a tiny report, followed by a very loud SMACK as the bullet impacts the target.

Well, my unscientific experiences ( I can't tell you how many decibles it was reduced), it's damn quiet.

I have a friend who put one on his new Walther P22, and it didn't affect the accuracy much at all, and it is VERY quiet.

Same here.  I have an Out Back that I move between a P22, MKII Ruger and Marlin bolt rifle.  I squirt just a bit of G-36 in the can before I mount it to help eliminate 1st round pop and it is super quiet.

It does not inhibit function on my P22.  The ultra light weight of the P22 and the light weight Out Back make an excellent system.  It all fits in the factory P22 box, including a box of shells.

I use Remington Target Standard Velocity with the Out Back (Blue/Green box) and it does not crack sonic from the Walther or the 4" bbl Ruger.

Stay away from Aguilla.  The bullet is overlong and my tip and damage the can.  In rifles try major brands of subsonic other than Aguilla.

How much (approx.) do they cost?

So it's perfectly legal to have the barrels threaded for the Outback on rifles like the 10/22, or other .22 rifles from companies like Marlin or Thompson?

The Gemtech Outback definately seems like an awesome product.  Prices I've seen are $300.00 which is pretty reasonable, although I understand there's $200.00 tax stamp/fee.  And I heard that you have to have the application signed by a law enforcement official.  I guess that means you have to justify or explain why you'd like to get the silencer/suppressor.

Good question on the 10/22 due to AW restrictions.  As for bolt actions, pistols, and single shots, no problem threading.  You are correct about the $200 NFA tax stamp.  You also must fill out a form 4, get finger-printed, and get your local CLEO to sign off stating that it is legal in your area to own one.  You do have to put a reason on the form four, I always use "collector of firearms", and I heard of people putting wild reasons as a joke without any problem.

I didn't know there was an issue with Ruger 10/22.  Is it because of the 30 and 50 round magazines?  And/or because it's semi-auto?  My cousin has a semi-auto .22 with the long tubular magazine that's permanently attached under the barrel.  It holds 14 rounds.  Is that OK?  Sorry about all the questions.

Technically the 10/22 can be an AW. Pistol grip, folding stock detachable mag versions. I had my 10/22 set up like this before 94 so it is technically a pre ban AW. Ha Ha. A supressor is a defacto flash supressor. So if you have a detachable mag you can only have two "deadly features" So a detach mag and supressor is OK as long as you don't add anything else. No pistol grip, detach mag, supressed post bans. But 10/22 pre-bans aren't like AR pre-bans so if you wan't one all decked out they really aren't that expensive and often they are bought as normal user guns. But it isn't technicaly a pre ban unless it was set up as an AW before 9/94.
