I sent off all of the paperwork for my C&R license today. Hopefully my credit cards will cool off in the next few weeks so I can give them a good workout when the license arrives!

I sent my application in on 23 Dec and had the license in my grubby little hands on Sat 18 Jan.

Now I gotta think of something kewl to buy w/ it, when I get back from the trip that I'm on. Oh well, gives me 10 days to think of what I want to buy. Mak, Mauser??? Any other suggestions?

The yugo Sks's are a good buy right now, probably one of the best buys around right now. The unissued M39 is a nice rifle also.  If you don't have a M44 Mosin Nagant they are real cheap and plentiful.

I've had my C&R license for 1.5 years and I only bought a total of 6 rifles & one handgun usnig it.

1-1927 Colt/Systema
1-Yugo SKS
1-Unissued Mauser
1-Crappy little 6.5mm Carcano Carbine
1-70% Enfield

Where I really made out was in the transfer of 2 of the rifles, one M1 Carbine and one M1 Garand from out of state dealers that saved me on transfer fees locally.

I've been so busy buying modern firearms that I haven't had the extra money for many C&R's.

For what it costs to get one if you only buy one firearm in 3 years you're at a break even point.

If its any consolation my license came back in just over 3 weeks.

I already get a decent deal on transfers ($5 for rifles, $10 for handguns), but I thought I might as well get the ability to have WMD's shipped directly to my home

Mine took almost two months to get here.  I got it two weeks ago, mailed out about 20 copies, and hope to order a new Yugo SKS next week.

Well, I finally have to ask!  What the hell is a C&R liscense?  Are there firearm restrictions on what you can buy?  Is it basically a FFL for a serious collector?

It's an FFL for Curio and Relic designated firearms. I think they have to be 50 years or....or something.

Before we get into the procedures involved, let's take a moment to discuss what a Collector of Curios or Relics Federal Firearms License is, and more importantly, what it is NOT.  (This is known as the Cruffler's Advice on Avoiding Enforced Stays at Club Fed.)

a) A Type 03 FFL is *NOT* a license to engage in a business of any kind.  Use it as such, and not only do you risk forfeiture of your license, but also federal criminal charges.  In other words, bad juju.  What constitutes engaging in a business is often the subject of debate, but it boils down to intent and appearance.  If your intent, upon the sale of a firearm is to enhance your collection, then you're fine.  If your intent is to earn a living, or if it appears that you are doing so for that reason, you stand to place yourself in serious jeopardy.

b) A Type 03 FFL does *NOT* entitle you to purchase and/or receive any gun you want from any source.  You may only purchase and/or receive those firearms that are either 1) demonstrably 50 years or more in age or 2) specifically mentioned in the Curios or Relics List published by the BATF.

What does it take to get a C&R license.  Is there a specific application you need to obtain or can you get one on line?
