I have a colt pre-ban ar15. i disassembled the buttstock. there was this little black rubber band that goes on the lower part of the stock that connects to the lower receiver, well i lost it and was wondering if anyone knows what i'm talking about, and if you do can you tell me where i can find one. is it necessary to have.?

Thanks

Are you talking about a collapsible AR stock or a standard A1/A2 stock?  I'm not familar with any rubber band for any of these, below are the parts for a CAR stock -

An A1/A2 stock involves only the buffer/spring assy., buffer tube (A2 stock will have a buffer spacer) & buttstock assy., pic -

You didn't loose the spring and/or indent pin for the rear take down pin did you?

my colt was made in 1990, so maybe they stopped using them. you see the A2 stock, if you look at the end of it, the opposite end of the trapdoor, you'll see a little stump, around that little stump goes a black rubber band around .5" diameter. when i bought my collapseable stock it didn't come with the rubber band. it's just really bugging me that i lost it, i wanted to return the rifle to the way it came from the factory, i might try to sell it, it's an AR15 gov't model.

I never seen that before on any ARs buttstocks before. Unless, it was used to try and give the stock a better fit into the lower. Probably someone at Colt was having too fun at work and put in a rubber cap into the assembly.

it's not a cap. it's like a ring that goes around that little stump at the end. it's really bugging me :-).

What kind of a buttstock?
A1? A2? Collapsable? Plastic? Aluminum?

I already looked at that diagram. nope, i can't find it. it's a colt A2 stock, plastic. you see where the spring goes in the stock itself, you see the little stump under the hole, a rubber ring goes around that part.

The indexing bump on the stock never came with a gasket.  If one came on yours, it was either an anomoly, or someone put it on after the fact.

My bet would be that the previous owner put it on to possibly cure a small amount of play with the stock.  If it would make you feel better I'll find a black o-ring that's the right size and send it to you.  It'll cost you $40 but hey, it is a custom Colt part you know.

ok, i'll take your advice and put it back together without the rubber thingie, but if i have a kaboom , it's your fault :-).

If you have kb because of a rubber band then it'd be time for me sell the AR's and start buying AK's.
