HI,

I have been out of the shooting game for a long time now, and am going to build another rifle. I have an AR now, and I have an older AR lower. I am assuming that they are Pre-Ban, but am not sure how to tell the difference. Would someone shed some light on this please!
Thanks
Wayne

It really depends on what kind it is.  If it says "AR-15" on it it is preban.  I think all colt sporters were preban as well.  If it is other makes you can go to their websites and find out the information by serial number.  I guess the easiest way is if you can remember owning it before Sept. '94 and it was part of a rifle with two or more "bad" features.

Best way to find out would be to go to the "industry board" for the maker and ask there.

Yup, what brand are they?

If it's Colt (you didn't specify), and the serial No starts w/"SP" you're good to go for preban

Hi,
The upper is not Colt. It was made by EA Company(Essential Arms), model J-15. I could not find anything on the web about them, and assume they are not in business anymore. I have had the parts for at least 12 years. I will post to the Industry page, and see what happens there.
Thanks,
Wayne

Hi,
Thank You so much for the information. Looks like DPMS now has the Essential Arms tooling, and that all EA lowers should be Pre-ban.
Thank You,

Your J-15 Lower was made by Essential Arms.  Your upper RECEIVER, maybe, especially if it matches the gray lower.  The upper was not assembled by Essential, as they did not make complete uppers.  They sold all parts except barrels.  All Essential Arms rifles you see are kit guns.

You've had the reciever for at least 12 years? Then you're good to go.
