The Springfield Armory 1911 I bought (Champion Model) came with a 7 round magazine.  I was looking for Wilson combat mags and they come in 7 and 8 round. Will the 8 extend out of the grip or still fit flush? Has anyone had problems using 8 round mags in commander size pistols? Do I get the .350 base pad or not?

Bamaboy, I have Springfield SS Champion Loaded. I have problems with 8 and 10 rds McCormick.  No problem with Meg-gard or Wilson 8
rds at all.

The wilson 7 rnd mags that are not the officer mags (wich is one more than they normally carry) are the same length as the 8 rnd mags.  Boy that is hard to put in words.

I have never heard of a problem with a wilson mag.  So you might as well use the 8rnders.  Many people like the base pads.  It helps to make sure you seat the mag well.  These are the 47d's which is the mag most people buy and are the industry standard.

mojo,  my buddy purchased a Springfield "loaded" package model.  On the last round of basically ANY brand magazine, he had a major malfunction/jam.  So bad that the slide would come home, jamming an empty piece of brass so bad that it took two people to pull his slide back.

He sent the gun back to Springfield and told them about his experience, along with a polaroid picture of an actual jam and some empty deformed brass casings.  His instructions were simple:  FIX THE DAMN THING!!!! THE GUN IS BRAND NEW!!!

He also added, "while you're at it, enhance the gun to the 'HRT' model."  Of course he was billed for the "HRT" upgrading of his gun.

Now his gun is awesome!  It' will shoot anything and basically it can even chamber an empty shell casing!  The gun works with Chip McCormicks, Wilsons, power-mags, Colt, etc...

Of course his HRT upgrade along with the initial price of the gun came to a grand total of around $2,000.

BUT,,,,,I'd carry it as a duty gun now.  We went to the desert last week and camped out there for a few days.  He shot 700 rounds of various FMJ and hollow point bullets.  He had no jams, and he didn't clean the gun once.  I was sold.

The 8-round Wilsons will stick out of your gun, even if only a little (assuming the newer thin basepads).

Hk45USP,  how much it costs to upgrade to the 'HRT'?  Thanks.
BTW, I'm glad he likes it.

The problem with 8-round magazines is that the "problems" do not show themselves quickly, and sometimes never, IF you do not keep your mags fully loaded all the time. With time, the spring in the older versions of Wilson 8-rounders would loose enough tension that it would begin to cause feed problems and fail to lock the slide to the rear...a potentially lethal problem in a pistol carried for serious purpose. They may be better these days...I have one that has been loaded for several months now and still works fine...but I KNOW the 7-rounders will work correctly for many, many years. IMO, not worth the trouble to keep mags sorted or wondering if today is the day the mag fails.

BTW, unless they have changed their minds, neither Bill Wilson or Bill Rogers...the guys who designed the magazine...use 8-rounders for carry.
