I just bought a Kimber Stainless II. The only thing I can say is what a well made gun. I have not shot it yet. Took too long doing paper work at the shop/range. But its got great sights and a really smooth trigger. I used to own a Smith 9mm and a couple Glocks. I really did not enjoy shooting any of them. It basically boild down to I had a nice Revolver (Ruger GP-100) thay I really liked and some autos that I had. I wanted an Auto that I would like to shoot, So the salesman at the shop talked me into a Kimber 1911, and I think this one is going to work for me.

Now enough with my story Here is why I really posted this. I was wondering what kind of mags you all like. The pistol came with a 7 rounder and I picked up a few U.S.G.I type mags at the gun show for $6 each. I want a few 8 rounders and 4 10 rounders for combat matches. Where is a good place to pick up some mags? Are Pacmyer Mags ok? Also fill out the survey and let me know what size mags you prefer.

I've had good luck with the 8 rnd. Chip McCormick Shooting Star mags that came with both of my Kimbers. The standard by which all 1911 mags are judged are the Wilson Combat mags, although for some reason my Kimbers don't like them.

I use Wilson Combat 8 rounders in my Springfield.  Ordered them right off their website.  Once you get them you will not put any other in your pistol.  Great magazines!

I use 7 round U.S.G.I. mags. Mfg. code 1M291 (Checkmate industries). Price is reasonable and I've never had a problem with them. I also have a 60 year old Remington-Rand General Shaver Division mag. I shoot it regularly and it never fails. What is the attraction to high priced magazines? I'm not a competition shooter and I just have a 1943 Remington Rand M1911A1. It's a reliable shooter as well. Not match accurate but good combat accuracy. I have won combat style competitions against "better" guns with this combination.

I haven't had any problems with 7 rounders, as long as they're not cheapo ones.   Can't go wrong with USGI.

Wilson has a great reputation, but they're like $30 for one 8rd. mag.  I personally like the Chip McCormick 8 rounders.  They're about $12-15 each, and come with the plastic 'bumper' deal that you can screw to the bottom, or leave off.  I have four so far, one stays loaded for home defense, and gets rotated into the others for range use.  I plan on getting more.

So, for 8 rounders, either Wilson, or Chip McCormick Shooting Star.  For the money, I like the CmCK's.  you can get two for what you'd spend on a Wilson.

When I used to sell magazines at gunshows I sold 100's of both the  Wilson and Chip McCormick Shooting Stars.  I can only remember 2 returns of  shooting star mags and 1 of the wilsons.  The shooting stars outsold the Wilsons by better then 2 to 1.  I carry both myself and am willing to stake my life on ether mag as long as they have been test.
Hope this helps.

Another vote for the wilson combat 8 rounders.  They are a little bit more money but I buy them from Brownell's for $20 a pop.  Although I do get a bit of a discount from brownell's being a copper.  HEHE...membership has it's advantages.

Just FYI, Midway has the Wilson 8 rounders on sale for $21.49 right now, $18.99 with your C&R (or other FFL).  Not quite as nice as the $9 CMC shootin starts at CDNN, though.

I have both Wilson and Shooting Star mags. They both work flawlessly for me. I would recommend both. I would stay away from the cheap gunshow mags. You get what you pay for!

I use Wilson 8rd mags exclusively.  I love the new blackened stainless ones with the metal base pads.  Totally reliable.

I use my combat commander for CCW, and used it for duty in the past. For those all I use are Wilson 8 rounders. For just messing around I have various mil-spec and factory 7 rounders. I also have 2 Chip McCormick 10 rounders, but I've only used them once or twice as they just don't feel right hanging out the bottom of the gun like they do.

I have 8 round Chip McCormick Power Mags for my S.A. 1911.

They work great, and I can get them with a base pad for $15.

FWIW-
I forgot about this.  Last fall I called Wilson Combat and asked them how they were able to get 8 rounds in a magazine that was designed for 7.  He stated they made the follower and spring smaller.  I've taken both apart and IIRC, the follower on the 8 is not as tall and the spring coils on the 8 are farther apart than on the 7.  I may have that spring fact backwards.  Can't remember.  He also stated if I wanted the best in reliability, go with the 7's.  Although I've owned/used 8's and never had a problem.

I like the eight rounder Shooting Stars, and the 10 rounders. The 7 rounders are just too many reloads.
Usually I use the eight rounders for daily carry and the 10's for matches.
