The .17 Rem., Is this the rd. that looks like a necked down .22 mag ?
I'm wondering...besides shooting targets,What would be the use of such a tiny round,I'm thinking the rd. would be overkill on small game that were intended for tablefare. And too small for coyotes.I've been wrong before.(once)
Anybody have one they've hunted with ?

No, the .17 Remington is a necked down .223.

The .17 HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire) is the "necked down .22 Magnum".

I haven't seen much on the terminal ballistics of this round, but I *believe* it is designed to explosively fragment QUICKLY, so that there is less likely a chance for an exit wound (for the pelt hunters).

It actually has much better exterior ballistics than the 22 Magnum, due to it's increased velocity (which results in a flatter trajectory).

I have heard of it being used on Coyotes, and it's *supposed* to be effective (says the shooter).

I'll see what I can turn up on it.  I could be wrong about some of this info.

The little SOB is a hot little rd. I saw a cast iron skillet cover holed from (I think) 100 yards. I don't know if there'll be a handgun for it, other than a T/C, but it looks real promising.

I wouldn't hesitate to use it on a coyote. 2 or 4 legged. >gg<

Thank's for clearing this up for me Men.
The rd. I saw was the .17HMR and not .17 rem.
One is rimfired the other centerfired.
NOW...If only ruger will manufacture a 10/.17 rifle.

IIRC, if you have the 10/22 version in .22WMR, you can swap barrels and shoot the .17HMR.

I wonder if it would be good against armored vests like the 4.7mm round.

The .17 Remington was first made from 222 cases. 223 cases can be used but this results in a shorter neck, which is okay. I want to eventually build an AR17, but I really doubt it is economically wise to do so. I would probably be better off building one on my 700 action.

.17HMR, Hornady Magnum Rimfire. Mine is a Ruger 77-17 and it's a nice little shooter.

FALFIRE,
The Ruger 77/.17 WRM ?
Thank's for the "Heads up".I'll take a closer look for one.
The only thing I'm worried about, is wind drift,In the 100 - 150 yd. range.
