The .17 Rem., Is this the rd. that looks like a necked down .22 mag ? I'm wondering...besides shooting targets,What would be the use of such a tiny round,I'm thinking the rd. would be overkill on small game that were intended for tablefare. And too small for coyotes.I've been wrong before.(once) Anybody have one they've hunted with ? No, the .17 Remington is a necked down .223. The .17 HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire) is the "necked down .22 Magnum". I haven't seen much on the terminal ballistics of this round, but I *believe* it is designed to explosively fragment QUICKLY, so that there is less likely a chance for an exit wound (for the pelt hunters). It actually has much better exterior ballistics than the 22 Magnum, due to it's increased velocity (which results in a flatter trajectory). I have heard of it being used on Coyotes, and it's *supposed* to be effective (says the shooter). I'll see what I can turn up on it. I could be wrong about some of this info. |

The .17 Remington was first made from 222 cases. 223 cases can be used but this results in a shorter neck, which is okay. I want to eventually build an AR17, but I really doubt it is economically wise to do so. I would probably be better off building one on my 700 action. .17HMR, Hornady Magnum Rimfire. Mine is a Ruger 77-17 and it's a nice little shooter. |
