After seeing Ilikelegs and mojo in action with there AK's at the Octoberfest. I went out today and put one on layaway. It's a Romanian in .223 with a 30rd mag, cleaning kit and sling for $295. Good Price?? Oh and I think I got a good deal on a 50 or 75 round drum for 75 bucks. I'm not sure how many it holds, it's about 6-7 inches round. Good deal? I don't know much about AK's. Anyone tell me? And it said SAR-3 on the side of the AK and had a russian scope mount on the left side. Thanks for any info!

Sounds like a pretty decent price on the SAR-3. You definetely didn't get hurt on it.

As far as the 75 or 100 round drum goes, I could be wrong here but it is probably a 7.62X39 drum. I have never seen a .223 AK drum. If I am wrong here, somebody please correct me.

Anyway, those AK's are alot of fun. I'm sure you'll have a blast with yours!

I agree with you ShamusMcI, I was just reading a couple of web-sites and they were saying the same thing. And I know the drum said maid in China. I'm going to go back tomorrow and take a closer look at the drum. I trust the guy and he'll let me return it for a full refund if it doesn't work, no questions asked.

Another question is do I have to look for special magazines since it's a .223? or will any AK mag work?

The AK is not entirely immune to the 223 round's ability to get finnicky about mags. The SAR3 in particular prefers Weiger steel mags, and one source is aimsurplus. Bulgarian 223 poly mags also work, cost the same, and may need some filing to fine tune. Success can also be had with ak74 mags, 223 followers from Robinson Arms, and dremeling of the feedlips.
I would start with Weigers (Made in E Germany), and then add a Red Star Arms trigger set (wonderfully adjustable and smooth for $80).
Good deal on the rifle, willing to be suprised on the drum for 223.
There is an AK side to this board also..

Odds are about 10 to 1 it's a 7.62x39 drum, and you can't use it with .223.  There were a very few .223 drums brought into the country from China about 20 years ago.  They didn't work worth a damn, because the Chinese just cobbled them up for USA sales.  Last ones I saw for sale (besides the one I had and sold to a guy with the warning that it wasn't worth a flip) were selling for about $200.

If the drum has any markings on it at all it ain't one of those Chinese pieces, which were totally unmarked.  Given the market at the moment, it's probably a Bulgarian 7.62 piece.  Pass on it.

If it is a .223 drum, I believe only polytech made them.  Polytech .223 rifles had either different sized magwells or magcatch than the SAR3, so not sure if it will fit. Keep us posted.

I looked at it today and judging by the size of the .223 mag and a 7.62 along side the drum, it was a 7.62 drum. But he did get me a SAR-1 (7.62x39) for 300 today. So I'm going to get the best of both. The SAR-1 is coming with 2-30rnd and a 10rnd, cleaning kit and sling. Sounded good to me. Next Hunfest I'm going to be ready to go. Red Goat is going to have to give me a lesson with the bump firing.

Man, I missed out on the Octoberfest.  I'm in a tight financial situation for a while, so I can't afford any ammo for something like that!

Hopefully next time I'll be able to come!  I'll bring my AR and my M1 Carbine, and probably the old goat (my M1) too.

Sounds like you found a new toy Sparsky!  Hope it shoots well for ya!

(and I am still going to try to get something on in the spring... you're still on the mailing list!)

After a 6 and a half hour drive to the hun farm, I'll pretty much go anywhere's in TX for a good shoot. Even bring the grill! You still should've went Mat, I would've given you some ammo. That or we could've went half on a battle pack or something. I had plenty of 30 carbine for the both of us. Maybe next time.

Alright, Sparsky.  I think you will enjoy AK a lot, especially bump firing.  I'm impressed that you hauled the grill with you.  You will come Spring Hun Shoot right?  Thanks for letting me shoot your M1.
