Does anyone have one of these? Wondered how well you like it?

I don't own one because I think they are butt ugly even though I love HK's.  If you go to the discussion forum at : http://www.hkpro.com/  you can ask the same question and get lots of feedback from people who own and shoot SL-8 rifles alot.  Last time I was spending time on the HK board, I found many people complaining of lower receiver cracks around the magazine wells of the SL-8.

Technically, one can legally buy only an SL8-1 in the States.
I'm also interested in more reviews on durability of this rifle, and in opinions of the optics.
IMHO

I spend a bunch of time on HKPro (USP .45F owner)
I've heard of a couple of complaints about cracks on the reciever.

But it seems that if you have the time and MONEY to invest into an SL-8, you can make it a very cool rifle. I think it would've been nice if HK sold it like that in the first place, but if you've got the cash, it looks pretty damn sweet.

With reference to Spade's post, I'll say that of particular interest to me are the modifications, especially those made my Special Weapons.
Thanks.

I may be talking out of my ass, since I don't own one, but from what I've read over at HKPro is that the mods to make it work with AR-15 mags work well. I think there is a SW mod, and something you can do yourself to the mag well.

The SW stock is apparently also pretty good, but some people don't like it since it's a bit longer and thicker then the G36, but I recall hearing something about that being more a problem based in the SL-8 (and it's differences between the G36) then SW.

But, like I said I might be talking out of my ass. A quick search of HKPro would work.

A bud of mine has one. I did the SW mag mod on it a few weeks ago. It was simple and works 100%. It was tested with 10rd BM mags, USGI 30rd mags and a PMI mag. All worked 100%. The bolt that came with the kit fit like it was factory. The owner shoots sub MOA with it. The gun is butt ugly...!

I've had a chance to extensively test one. I fell in love. This was one that had aftermarket mag-well, and the dual optic carry handle. The AR mags work great, however I did also find a crack in the receiver. I like the factory optics, a red dot and magnified scope in the carry handle. My only complaint is that's like looking through a thin straw. Other than that, I think it's worth the price ($2000+). With the amount of accessories available you can find a set-up that's just right for you.

I was told that the modification to take AR mags required a milling operation. This was from the makers of the conversion kit, Top Notch Accessory. Is this right or can it be done by anyone?

I bought my SL8 and USC the first year they came out, well before anyone thought of dyeing or putting a 30rd clip in it. I bought them simply because I liked them. They shoot great and they are different.  Much easier to clean than any AR I own. I'll even bet they will hold their value better than any post-ban AR15 rifle out there. Just my .02cts.

Tens of Thousands of rounds of ammunition with absolutly NO malfunctions OR cracks.

The only SL8 I've shot had the dual optic carry-handle, SW mag-conversion, and the G36-style front end with a muzzle brake. Maybe the owner hadn't worked the bugs out because it was a little problematic on feeding. That said, shooting it felt fairly natural and the balance was nice. If you've had the chance to use any other optics the dual optics won't really seem up to the job (IMHO), but it is nice to have both a red-dot and a 4x scope at the same time.

It's expensive though once you add on the goodies and at the end of the day you won't have an SL8, or a G36, but some compromise between the two with alot of non-H&K parts. None of that is H&K's fault though. For me, if I'm going to spend that kind of money for an H&K I'd want an H&K. That's personal opinion though, there's lots of black converted SL8 owners that are happy.

I have a friend who has a HK SL8-1
It is big, chunky, the thumbhole is too small, and
it is too heavy.
You can make a good rifle out of it-
Pistol grip stock, magwell conversion, optic CH
ect.
But is it really worth $3000.00 ?
I think not.

If I were going to spend $3000.00 on a rifle that was .223 and Sub MOA, I wouldn't buy HK's ugly stepchild (SL-8) converted or not.  I would probably go in the dirrection of one of the following guns.....

And if .223 is not a requirement............
