I'm going to the range Wednesday with a fellow board member from the PRNJ who likes to come over to the free state of PA from time to time and shoot his ARs with the magazine capacity that God and Gene intended (and play with some of my toys). Now I plan on bringing along 10 rifles; 3 ARs, a RobArm M96, 3 AKs, and 3 FALs, so I decide to load up a few magazines beforehand. By the time I got done today I had packed up the following: 39 thirty-round AR mags, loaded with either XM193, Swiss 63gr, 55gr SA, or Wolf 62gr. 10 twenty-round AR mags, loaded with either Swiss 63 gr or M855 11 AK-74 mags 10 AK-47 mags 1 100-round AK-47 drum 10 metric FAL mags 10 inch FAL mags Now this doesn't include pistol ammo, extra rifle ammo, and assorted accesories. One thing I realized was that after loading up all these mags is that I have a whole lot of mags (since it barely made a big dent in the boxes of magazines I have), and I'm running a little low on 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 (under 2K of each left). So is this just a sickness or am I under-prepared? |

I'm currently envisioning the long cleaning and mag reloading session that you'll have after that trip. . . the many trips back to the vehicles you'll take to get all the rifles to the range. . . how much space all of that will take at the rack! I'd not say that you've "over packed", but I will say that if it were me, then I'd add a little more variety into the mix. Why not bring a shotgun or two along to shoot some trap, or skeet, or clays while you guys are out? Seems like a lot of sitting on a bench for me. A solid precision rifle? A C&R gun? Blackpowder? I have a hard time heading to the range with a friend, or group of friends, without turning the outing into a game. You may be the same way. Helps, then, (at least for me) to have a couple of different shooting disciplines so that there are different ways to win. Of course, the primary reason for your trip to the range may be to use the "pre-ban" mags only. If your range is sympathetic to the desires of rapid fire shooters, then 30 quick shots may be fun enough. Otherwise, for me, the novelty would tend to wear off quite rapidly, so to speak. I find that in all sorts of sports where there is potential for competition (is this inherent in "sports"?), a running tally that spans many trips or many years keeps things very interesting. Maybe you do this already, maybe I've just managed to gravitate towards other competitive M'ers who push me; and that this may not, for you, be the best plan. It's fun, but not a suggestion, just my way. In any case, sounds like a great day. Hope that the weather conditions are ideal. Lucky you. |

IMHO - The main reason for the range trip for me is to shoot a few new guns (CavArms, AK-74 clone, M96 in Recon Carbine config), and to sight in some reconfigured guns (Israeli HB and LB FALS), so I don't expect to be doing all that much shooting. Looks like my order of H&K aluminum mags will have arrived, so I might take a few of those along to function test, too. Our poor comrade from the PRNJ however, doesn't get much opportunity to blast away with high cap mags (even though he is a LEO) so most of that (especially the 100 round AK drum) are for him. Maybe next trip out will hit the 5-Stand, or I'll take him dove hunting with me. This is a blasting trip primarily though. Next time who knows? Maybe all C&R guns, or head out to the 500 yard range (a much longer drive) and see how often we can tap the gong. eswanson - I do tend to overpack; I brought about 10,000 rounds with me to the BRC UHLEK - Why would i worry about getting pulled over? Everything in the vehicle is lawful. |
