I just got a Russian M44(1945) new.  It still has the heavy grease on/in it.  It feels like a wax/grease.  What could I use to get rid of it fast?

Diesel or gasoline.  Gasoline's a little more dangerous to work with.  Don't soak the wood in it.  You don't want to dry the stock out too much.

I found that Gunscrubber works great for removing oils and grease really fast.  The spray tube that comes with the can will let you get into all the cracks and crevices with good spray pressure.  The nice thing about Gunscrubber is that it is dry before you know it.  Just be sure to go in with some good gun oil or Break Free CLP to coat the metal surfaces you cleaned with the Gunscrubber.

I use mineral spirits to remove the cosmoline, and brake cleaner to hose out nooks and crannies.  Follow up with oil or CLP.

my m44 cleaning process.

extend bayonete
stick in ground.

remove bolt
spray entire rifle <wood and all> with "greased lightning"
let stand 5 min and scrub lightly with brush.

repeat until grease is gone. Never had to do more then twice. Rinse with water hose.

from there i disassemble completely and detail scrub the wood and metal.
