I have insurance on my firearms though my homeowners policy (Allstate), which was slightly cheaper than the NRA.

Check out: www.gunowners.org/op0231.htm

and another good article with more information

www.scfirearms.org/garya.htm

It tells how State Farm does not want certain gun owners and will drop you with 7 days notice or less.

Prudential is also listed as being a problem.

www.lockton.com is a company who works with NRA for insurance and I have heard good things about.

They recommend "Farm Bureau, Nationwide and American National Property and Casualty."

I am checking with Nationwide right now.

Aimca is a company who will not insure if your house if you have firearms also.  This is from recent personal expierence.

You are the best insurance company your guns can have! That reminds me, I need to buy another safe before I can buy more guns, or sell some to make room, nah I need more GUNS!

Depending on where you live, your best bet may not be your homeowners carrier. Here in Nazi Jersey, one of the quick ways to get cancelled is to inform them you have firearms.

Ah, a fellow prisoner, um, resident!  Were you dropped?  Who was it?  (I'm just curious, so I might avoid such a crappy company)

No, not dropped. Insurance agent is a friend and warned me off. Told me most NJ insurers are fraidy scared of insuring gun owners and will drop you because of litigious nature of the indigenous sheeple.

There's an outfit out there called Collector's Insurance Agency which is supposed to be pretty good.

Nationwide agent did not bat an eye when mentioning firearms.  Just asked how much to make the rider out for.  Prices are not the cheapest - roughly about 10%+ moer than Prudential or Amica.
