Thanks all for the kind words.
Savagemann I hung the outer jacket you see as a back drop up behind a portable work table and used that as my guide. I cut my own stencil from a 50 yard small bore target. I thought the combination of stiff and flexible would be good. It was much better than regular bonded printer paper I tried but still not as effective as I would like. I'm looking for one of those large window stickers that stick by static cling, I think that might make an even better stencil material and being silicone it should last a long time and clean up easy. I started the project by stripping the rifle down to its base components. Stuffed a bunch of blue shop rags inside areas I did not want painted and taped areas that had threads and small holes. The base coat of paint is textured sand as I wanted the surface to be a bit rough. In reflection it was not necessary as the multiple layers of flat paint seems to create a very rough finish anyway. I had paint from several different sources and bought some at Ace Hardware, and Tractor Supply. I'll have to compile a list as after some testing I found many just did not work at all or were just too far off in color for my taste. I will post back later the list of colors and how I layered them. After the base of sand color I shot a second coat of several colors, I resisted the urge to do stripes of color, after looking closely at the Multi cam it has layers of blobs that overlap, like the fall of random leaves in the fall. So I painted more like blobs of color. this second layer was three types of green, each over lapping, a blob of red/brown color here and there. After these dried I used a Kaki and Dark Earth to add the fingers and dots. I did some where I over lapped these with both Kaki and DE and some where these colors were stand alone. I finished a Vortex Red Dot today while I was working on a couple M1 rifles. I'll post up a photo of that later. |
| Nice job, I like it, you did a lot more fingers and boogers than I did so I'm sure you actually have more work into your rifle than mine. I'm guess you cut your own templates correct? What material was the templates made from, I'm still on the hunt for a better paper or material for my next set of stencils. |

They're more sturdy than plain paper sheets, and they're big enough to hold without spraying my fingers. |

Really not that hard, just remember not to paint anything that moves and cover up all the little holes and sights and glass. Let the paint dry between applications. And if you don't like the pattern spray again. I used several old pieces of stock hardware to test my pattern before I did the rifle. You see them at the top of the pictures above, there are several coats of colors and patterns under all of the top paint you don't see as I was not happy with the out come. Best of luck.

Great work! I am too chicken to try a complex pattern like that. |
