Just too much free time on my hands I guess.  Went full Multi Cam Kinda on the rifle and some other parts playing around.  I wear Multi Cam Hog hunting and settled on that pattern after multiple failures at coming up with an ATACS copy.  Not giving up on the ATAC yet, just thinking about how to get the blendting correct.

Good job.
I've been wanting to do one of my rifles in multicam.
What brand/color paint did you use and what was the process?
Did you use pre made stencils, or cut out your own?

Thanks all for the kind words.
Savagemann I hung the outer jacket you see as a back drop up behind a portable work table and used that as my guide.  I cut my own stencil from a 50 yard small bore target.  I thought the combination of stiff and flexible would be good.  It was much better than regular bonded printer paper I tried but still not as effective as I would like.  I'm looking for one of those large window stickers that stick by static cling, I think that might make an even better stencil material and being silicone it should last a long time and clean up easy.  I started the project by stripping the rifle down to its base components.  Stuffed a bunch of blue shop rags inside areas I did not want painted and taped areas that had threads and small holes.  The base coat of paint is textured sand as I wanted the surface to be a bit rough.  In reflection it was not necessary as the multiple layers of flat paint seems to create a very rough finish anyway.  I had paint from several different sources and bought some at Ace Hardware, and Tractor Supply. I'll have to compile a list as after some testing I found many just did not work at all or were just too far off in color for my taste.  I will post back later the list of colors and how I layered them.  After the base of sand color I shot a second coat of several colors, I resisted the urge to do stripes of color, after looking closely at the Multi cam it has layers of blobs that overlap, like the fall of random leaves in the fall. So I painted more like blobs of color.  this second layer was three types of green, each over lapping, a blob of red/brown color here and there.  After these dried I used a Kaki and Dark Earth to add the fingers and dots. I did some where I over lapped these with both Kaki and DE and some where these colors were stand alone.  I finished a Vortex Red Dot today while I was working on a couple M1 rifles.  I'll post up a photo of that later.

OK, so here's a list of paints that I tried and the ones I ended up using.  There were Grey's and Greens I tried that I did not like but for one.  The Rust-Oleum  Satin Hunter Green is spot on for the MultiCam Hunter Green, the problem is it's glossy as hell, not satin at all.  You'll see a little of it on the SOPMOD Stock and M4 hand guards but you can't tell from the photo how shinny it is.  Now here's the complete list of colors and whom makes it.  None of the Grey paints I tested fit into any camo pattern I wanted to duplicate.  I'm sure I will end up finding a way to work it into a ATAC's pattern somehow but for now Grey seems a waste of money.

The Base coat is:

Rust-Oleum,   Textured,    Sand Stone

The Second blotch coat:

Magic,   Camo Spray Paint,  Oil Base,  Flat Finish,  Color is indicated by cap color, this is the Yellow/Green color, more yellow than green and the cap color and paint do not match up at all.  It does however look OK and stands in for the mustard green in the MultiCam OK.

Rust-Oleum,  Camo,  Army Green, sprayed over lapping the Magic yellow/green color paint.

Rust-Oleum, Camo, Deep Forest Green, sprayed over lapping the Army Green and Yellow/Green paints.  Light misting of the yellow green helps a lot to match the MultiCam Mustard green.

Magic, Camo Spray Paint, Oil Base, Flat Finish,  Color is indicated by cap color, this is the Red Brown and is a very good match for the MultiCam Red Brown.

Krylon, Fusion, Satin Espresso,  This is a good match for the MultiCam Medium Brown, I used this paint to overlap the Magic Red Brown, seems to work well.

These are all the Second coat Large Blotch colors.

Last is the finger and boogers.

These were applied with the help of a homemade stencil.  I just look at the MultiCam itself and cut out a handful of designs free hand.  Just go with it, I don't think it matters as long as the openings are not too large.

The two colors I used seem to be the closest to MultiCam colors by far so that seems to help the whole pattern appear correct I think.

Rust-Oleum, Camo, Khaki

Rust-Oleum, Camo, Earth Brown

Remember preparation is 90% of a good paint job.  I whipped down everything with Acetone.  I was even surprised by the amount of dirt and grime that came off on the cleaning rag.  I would have said the rifle was spotless if I had been asked.  Second, you can clearly see finger prints here and there.  I was in a hurry and even thou I allowed enough time by the instructions the weather here has been cool and damp and the paint was not set in a couple of the thinker areas where several coats over lapped.  Not a huge deal to me as it just makes it even more cammy, just food for thought.

A correction as well, Above I said I got some paint from Ace Hardware and I did, but the Magic Camo Paint I think came from a Family owned Hardware store near me and I do not know were they purchase their merchandise from.

last a few more pictures from today, I put the guts back in the rifle and painted a Vortex Red Dot to match the rifle. Just need a NVS-14 and ready to harvest some wild bacon.

Awesome. Thanks for listing everything out.
I have a bunch of Aerovoe paints in the can, but think I may be lacking some green hues.
I'm afraid mine will come out like Multicam Arid, which may not look bad.
Thanks again.

This thread inspired me to give it a try. I figured I would practice on my sks before I paint my AR.

It'll do, I think the next time will go easier. It was too windy to paint outdoors, so I did this in my barn. Unfortunately, there's no light in there, so it was difficult to tell if I sprayed the fades good enough. While I was at it, I added a light rail to the stock.

Nice job, I like it, you did a lot more fingers and boogers than I did so I'm sure you actually have more work into your rifle than mine.  I'm guess you cut your own templates correct?  What material was the templates made from, I'm still on the hunt for a better paper or material for my next set of stencils.

Thanks. I cut the stencils from paper plates. They're more sturdy than plain paper sheets, and they're big enough to hold without spraying my fingers.

Adhesives can make things a lot easier sometimes. Either way, good luck on the next projects.

Great work! I am too chicken to try a complex pattern like that.

Really not that hard, just remember not to paint anything that moves and cover up all the little holes and sights and glass.  Let the paint dry between applications.  And if you don't like the pattern spray again.  I used several old pieces of stock hardware to test my pattern before I did the rifle.  You see them at the top of the pictures above, there are several coats of colors and patterns under all of the top paint you don't see as I was not happy with the out come.  Best of luck.
