I am refinishing my Mosin with just Zinsser Amber Shellac. After drying my coats for about 12 hours, the coat is still slightly rubbery. If I press my fingers into the finish hard enough, it will leave my fingerprints in them.
Is this normal or does it need more drying? I though shellac was supposed to be crusty when dried. Thanks |

Shellac uses denatured alcohol as a solvent and normally dries hard to the touch relatively quickly when applied at room temperature. Do you have any residue left on the stock that has contaminated the shellac preventing it from curing?
You can check to see if the shellac is good by coating a piece of clean scrap wood you have laying around. If it dries hard, then the problem is contaminates on the stock that need to be removed. If you have the same problem then you have bad shellac. |
