i decided to paint, but i'm no artist so i'm going to practice on some 2x4's before painting my ar (a simple three color scheme).  it seems simple enough and i feel fairly confident it'll come out the way i want.  i plan on painting freehand, no stencils.

my questions are:

do you have to paint the ar with it hanging freely or could you just lay it down on some cardboard or newspaper and paint one side, dry it then flip it over and paint the other?  (i have no place to hang it from.)

is a base coat really necessary?

i ask the last question because it's just krylon and it wears off after some use (so i've read).  i could just spray again later.  i'm not looking for something elaborate or labor intensive.  this will just be a spay-and-pray project.

1st question. I put a taped magazine in the AR then secure that in a vise. That way I can get to all sides of the gun at any time.

2nd question. I usually start with a coat of the lightest color I am using. I then add to that. It's just krylon. If it doesnt work just do it again.  It will wear but that isn't an issue to me.
