For your entertainment, education and because I think it came out great....
Back story, My 870 was starting to get a bit of surface rust from sitting in a non humidity controlled environment for too long, I cant always get out to make sure it gets wiped down unfortunately. As this situation is unlikely to change, and because I thought it would be cool to do, I decided to paint it. I actually enlisted the help of my friend and roommate Fastbanana. He has more experience and knowledge about such things than I do. First, stripped it all apart and cleaned and degreased every surface that the paint was going to be applied to, we used break cleaner and rubbing alcohol to surface prep everything and then set it out to dry. 
Then laid everything and applied two layers of tan base color, Krylon tan I believe, We applied the first layer, let dry and applied a second layer, pretty easy stuff so far. We also taped off things we didn't want to paint, inside of the receiver, action bars, sights, ect. 
After the paint dried, we started pattern testing on the spare stock I have for the gun, ended up laying down grassy stuff and going over with a dark brown, changed the grass pattern and did it again with a lighter brown and once more again with green 
By this time the rest of the parts were dry enough to handle carefully so we partially reassembled the shotgun, left out the bolt, trigger pack, springs ect. And again, we taped over anything we didn't want to paint, ejection port, sights, ect. 
We then applied the pattern to the rest of the shotgun. We only painted sections of the gun at one time, mostly to be sure the pattern turned out well before we did the whole gun. 
This is after the gun has been painted on both sides but we haven't fully reassembled it yet. 
All that was left was to reassemble, being gentle with the freshly painted surfaces, I left some parts black, partially because the contrast looks good and partially because the parts are either aluminium or plastic and don't need much corrosion resistance.
