Was recently given a scope that has been painted –– poorly.  Its a nice scope and I'd like to strip it and refinish.

Wondering the best way to go about this.  Concerned that if I put it in my blast cabinet, the media (alox) is fine enough that it will penetrate the seals and get inside the scope tube, magnification ring, etc.  If I use acetone or some sort of stripper, I'm worried that it will eat the rubber seals.  I could sand it, but there are enough nooks and crannies that this wouldn't work over 100% of the scope.

Any ideas?

What kind of paint is it?

If it's just spray paint, soak a rag with denatured alcohal and rub it off.  Even stuff as strong as alumahyde II, you can use finger nail polish remover.

Will this harm the glass?  If I use tape to tape off the lenses, won't the solvent eat the tape?
