A dealer I know is selling a Smith & Wesson 686-3, 8-3/8" barrel, Eighties-era (no lock) for $500.00 as a consignment, though I think i could talk it down.  Previous owner used it as a carry piece, my guess is for hunting or camping based on the holster that is with it.

The nickel finish is in the shape you would expect from a nickel finish revolver that was carried in a nylon holster with no apparent padding.  Is there anything that can be done to it, finish-wise?  I am interested in the gun as a shooter, but I hate having guns, especially shiny ones, all scratched to shit.

Honestly if I can get a bit knocked off the price and there is nothing to be done for the finish, I might buy it and have it DuraCoated.

If its a 686 then it isn't nickel but stainless. it can be brushed lightly on a fine wire wheel, regular buffing wheels, mask off and beadblast the the top surfaces.
