A.) There was a thread recently, or so I had thought, wherein the poster described a jury-rigged parkerizing system involving crushed AA batteries and so forth. I have looked back through 15 pages, but can't find it.

2.) When re-parkerizing an object from which the finish has worn in spots, while remaining largely unaffected in other areas, is it necessary to remove the original coating, or can one simply re-parkerize over the existing coating?

Third, is parkerizing a "coating", or is it an alteration of the metal itself? Does removing it also remove a fine layer of the original metal? If so, will repeated applications affect dimensions and tolerances enough to be an issue?

It reacts with the surface of the metal. Anything on the metal of any kind, including fingerprints, will effect the results. Best results is to bead blast everything to bare metal then park.

I think you may be referring to Gaspains 1911 chronicle. It's tacked in the 1911 discussion forum.
