What's the best way to prep a gun for gunkote if you don't have a way to bead blast it?  Will it stick to blueing?

break cleaner works well.  Do not use carb cleaner.

I have KG'd over blueing and it does stick.  However it is not as durable since most blueing is glossy smooth.  On my own guns I just want a coating that won't just rub off and can withstand solvents and oil.

KG onto bare metal that has been sand blasted (no weaker layers underneath), over parkerizing is best so it has something to bite onto.

Duracoat recommends Sand Blasting over Bead Blasting, because Bead Blasting polishes more than roughs up surface like Sand.  Of course I'm sure that differs with the surface, Stainless Steel I think roughs up more with glass beads than sand.  Best to go with what ever KG recommends, but lacking any guidance you want a rough surface for the paint to adhere.

I'm in the middle of a Duracoat project, I got a cheapo eBay spot sandblaster and some 120grit aluminum oxide to rough up the surface of my AR parts, especially the plastic and teflon coated anodizing.  It seemed to work well, but I'm still painting so I won't know for sure how well it worked until some time in the future.

Since I'm doing the job before assembling a new build, after the brake cleaner  to degrease/de-oil, I scrubbed each part with diswashing soap and water, after drying another rub down with 91% isopropyl alcohol, and then blown clean with compressed air.  This left a very clean, grease free, residue free surface.
