I like to call it the worm technique.. I start in one corner and work my way back and forth covering the whole square, kind of like a fingerprint(loops, swirls, etc). Pretty simple technique, very quick, and feels better than dot stippling in my opinion. Slower you go the more the plastic melts so you can adjust the aggressiveness of the texture with speed.

Cool. Probably a lot quicker than the dot method too. I'll nearly go blind and get some wicked cramps in my hand just doing one mag

And I've given up on that texture for the moment haha. I've cut some attachments with a Dremel but it doesn't come out looking anything like that.

\ On the off chance that it helps; here's what I used.

I started with the bit from a woodburning kit that looked like the one on the right.  Then I filed it flat.  I bought a checkering file (which is on the left; NOT cheap... but pretty darn high quality - Mine is Swiss and has a little bunny rabbit on it ), and filed the checker pattern into it.  It then took some tweaking flattening out the 'points' of the checkers until it would give the right depth/look to the pattern, but I think it turned out alright all things considered. It gets gummed up with polymer every 5-10 presses, so you have to constantly be cleaning out the grooves which is frustrating, but it still goes much faster than the 'dot' method or any others I've tried so far.

Maiden, if you don't mind me asking; do you do the 'border' before or after the texture fill? Debating trying to take a pass at adding one to my 23, but afraid I'll ruin it and I'm almost out of PMag practice room, hah.

Couple of different shots of mine...

How do you like that knife? I've eyeballed them a few times and they seem pretty good for the price ($39 on Amazon). I haven't bought a Kershaw in several years and their assisted opening wasn't all that good. I wonder if they've improved upon their model since.

With a fresh frame doing the border first is ideal. However, you can still add a nice border to an already stippled frame, you just have less option for your layout. Ive redone the borders on a few of my frames after finding better methods for the border with no problem. Give me a few days Ill PM you how I do the border since you hooked me up with the waffle pattern.

I love that knife, actually.  For a while I was carrying the smaller one, the original Cryo, and then my friend introduced me to Benchmade and I picked up the HK Axis 14715 that was my EDC for ~a year.

I originally bought the Cryo II because I wanted a black stonewashed blade as a photo prop, and this was cheap and I liked the original Cryo. I liked it so much, though, that I now carry that more often than my Benchmade!  Steel quality obviously isn't up to the Benchmade (8Cr13MoV vs. D2), but it's a great size, easy to sharpen, lockup is super solid, the assisted-open is nice and slick (I have 5 or so Kershaws now and this one is smoother than the others), etc..  I paid ~$35 for mine on ebay.

Good deal. I'm a die hard Benchmade guy (I think it's neigh impossible to improve upon the AXIS lock), so not many other brands catch my eye much. I really like that stonewash look. I may just grab one. For the price, I'm not gonna cry if I don't like it like I would with a BM.

I dont think I want to turn those cards over just yet.. I will say that all the answers are out there if you look at enough pictures and experiment enough. Ive been obsessed with stippling for a while now and tried quite a few methods that worked, but didnt quite give me the look I wanted and discarded it. Its just a process of elimination until you get the right look. I know this probably isnt the answer youre looking for, but I hope it helps somewhat.

Ill give one really big clue. Just a fyi I dont know how accurate this is as it is just based on my observations of photos and not direct contact. But if you look at photos of some of the better work with recessed borders like Boresight and Tactical texture, you may notice that the border fades into the beavertail or is almost nonexistent around the beavertail. So the question you have to ask is is that by design, or a limitation of the tool they use? And what tool will cause that limitation but still allow them to create the border elswhere?

Thats all I will say lol.

This latest one looks awesome Maiden; I realy like the overall look resulting from you cutting your tip with diamonds instead of squares.  Looks like you're getting even better at the borders, too.

Thanks man! The diamonds was actually an accident. The screws on my original one crossthreaded an I had to make a new one and I didn't quite get it right and thought "hey, I kind of like that" lol. I think it kind of gives a snakeskin look to it.

I agree never was a fan on the square ones, but the diamond looks much better.

Almost got those recessed borders down.

Looking good! Much better than I've been able to figure out. I've more or less given up on the borders for the moment..

And I've given up on that texture for the moment haha. I've cut some attachments with a Dremel but it doesn't come out looking anything like that.

I (we?) used the 00, 20 LPI version. I think the 0 (30 LPI) would be too fine of a pattern; but you can always try it and let us know!  It might end up being even better.

I wish Amazon had it (and it was that cheap) when I bought mine...

Seeing this makes me want to cut a new bit and redo mine with the diamonds.

I'm in the middle of trying (for the 3rd or 4th time) to put borders around my 23.  It's just getting worse and worse and worse.

Thanks, I think the pattern seems to blend a bit better for me with the diamonds. Definitely a lucky accident. Here is my Sig P320 I did with the Diamonds with a uniform texture instead of random:

Same tool but a much different look I think.

Good luck with those borders I hope it turns out well for you.

And did a little experimenting:

This might look familiar..

Edit: one more sample

Had to figure out a different way to do the borders. This style opens up pretty much any layout possibility

I found this thread and have experimented for a couple days.  Turned out pretty well.

I started with the A2 grip, then moved on to stippling the images on the pmags.  Next I tried doing the whole grid pattern on the pmag, and ended up doing an M&P shield.

And, had to put dickbutt on a mag.

Not trying to rip off anyone here, but I was challenged to duplicate SSVI grip work on a shield. More of an experiment than anything to just to see if I could do it. Required a different way to do borders than I have done in the past. Here is what I came up with

Mine is on the right
