I started with the bit from a woodburning kit that looked like the one on the right. Then I filed it flat. I bought a checkering file (which is on the left; NOT cheap... but pretty darn high quality - Mine is Swiss and has a little bunny rabbit on it  ), and filed the checker pattern into it. It then took some tweaking flattening out the 'points' of the checkers until it would give the right depth/look to the pattern, but I think it turned out alright all things considered. It gets gummed up with polymer every 5-10 presses, so you have to constantly be cleaning out the grooves which is frustrating, but it still goes much faster than the 'dot' method or any others I've tried so far.

For a while I was carrying the smaller one, the original Cryo, and then my friend introduced me to Benchmade and I picked up the HK Axis 14715 that was my EDC for ~a year. I originally bought the Cryo II because I wanted a black stonewashed blade as a photo prop, and this was cheap and I liked the original Cryo. I liked it so much, though, that I now carry that more often than my Benchmade! Steel quality obviously isn't up to the Benchmade (8Cr13MoV vs. D2), but it's a great size, easy to sharpen, lockup is super solid, the assisted-open is nice and slick (I have 5 or so Kershaws now and this one is smoother than the others), etc.. I dont think I want to turn those cards over just yet.. I will say that all the answers are out there if you look at enough pictures and experiment enough. Ive been obsessed with stippling for a while now and tried quite a few methods that worked, but didnt quite give me the look I wanted and discarded it. Its just a process of elimination until you get the right look. I know this probably isnt the answer youre looking for, but I hope it helps somewhat. |

Ill give one really big clue. Just a fyi I dont know how accurate this is as it is just based on my observations of photos and not direct contact. But if you look at photos of some of the better work with recessed borders like Boresight and Tactical texture, you may notice that the border fades into the beavertail or is almost nonexistent around the beavertail. So the question you have to ask is is that by design, or a limitation of the tool they use? And what tool will cause that limitation but still allow them to create the border elswhere?
Thats all I will say lol. |

Looks like you're getting even better at the borders, too. Thanks man! The diamonds was actually an accident. The screws on my original one crossthreaded an I had to make a new one and I didn't quite get it right and thought "hey, I kind of like that" lol. I think it kind of gives a snakeskin look to it. |

What is better 0 or 00? I (we?) used the 00, 20 LPI version. I think the 0 (30 LPI) would be too fine of a pattern; but you can always try it and let us know! It might end up being even better.

I found this thread and have experimented for a couple days. Turned out pretty well.
I started with the A2 grip, then moved on to stippling the images on the pmags. Next I tried doing the whole grid pattern on the pmag, and ended up doing an M&P shield. 
And, had to put dickbutt on a mag.

Not trying to rip off anyone here, but I was challenged to duplicate SSVI grip work on a shield. More of an experiment than anything to just to see if I could do it. Required a different way to do borders than I have done in the past. Here is what I came up with
