They are not “Stickman” quality photos… Sorry
I started with some Pre-Ban Okay Industries 30 Round Magazines (originally with black followers), I had already been using them so the pics have the Green USGI followers.
A couple of old Vietnam Era Colt 20 round Magazines with the alloy followers.

I disassembled them, scrubbed them clean with a 3M Scotch Brite™ Green scouring pad then a 220 grit sandpaper sponge, the kind you use to finish wood pieces. (I felt it held together better than fine steel wool). For some of the tougher places I used a Dremel with a wire brush bit. I took out the springs and followers. I used mild soap and water to wash them through out. A light touch of acetone to degrease before painting, now use gloves from so fingerprint oils don’t ruin the paintjob

I hung them all on wire hangers then set up my Airbrush Kit. I mixed the DuraCoat Colt Gray to the manufactures 12:1 paint to hardener ratio.  And proceeded to spray away. Make sure you use a Respirator not just a dust mask. The fumes generated are pretty intense and can cause dain bramage… I mean brain damage, brain d-d-damage.

I let them dry and set overnight. No baking necessary.

I kept the alloy followers for the Colt 20 round magazines. I figured “If they aint broke”.
I might change my mind though.
On the Okay Industries 30 round magazines I did make some changes.
I upgraded to Magpul Orange Anti Tilt Followers and Magpul Ranger Plates.
If I like the function and reliability of the upgrades I will do the rest of my magazines.

Stick,
Have you encountered any issues with Norrells coated mags instead of a "dry lube" finish (ie drop free)?  Do you use any of these in your "tactical" bag, or are they dedicated to just "fun"?

BTW, thanks for the tips on refinishing AR's - it sure is addictive.  I've had more comments on why my AR's are Colt Grey-Black instead of Black.  Makes great range talk.....

Damn they came out great.

Makes me want to order more mags just to refinish!

The magazines that I coated in the above pictures were the British parkerized mags.  The parkerized surface hold the Norrells very well.  Norrells on a bare aluminum mag doesn't hold up as nicely.

I plan to blast a few, and I'll see how that works out.
