Hello all. I have an old AR, colt XM-177 circa 70s. I would like to repaint the whole thing, any suggestions on what I should do first?

Thanks.

I'm overseas. I'm thinking of really breaking it to the last piece for a thorough cleaning/painting. Will I be needing special tools to do that?

Thanks.

I used Krylon on my AR and it was ok
Im assuming you want more than a closet camo job

Here's how it looks today, pretty sad. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k289/super_bogart/DSC00023.jpg

If you refinish it with Norrells, it will end up looking much like the original deep grayish finish.    Clean, degrease, preheat, and spray.  You may want to take a look at the refinishing guide, as it walks you through every step (with pics).

Looks like someone stripped it and painted it with rustoleum!

I kind of like the worn out used look......

I should start a service to refinish in KG Gun Kote for people.....

if it is very nicked up, a thorough sandblasting might be needed to smooth out some of the metal.

Oh, I dunno...looks okay to me. If it were mine, I'd probably paint the moderator to match the rest of the gun, and maybe the delta ring, too. Other than that, I probably wouldn't do much to it. Look at the bright side; at least you know it isn't a "safe queen"!

Thank you all for your inputs. Stick, where do I find your refinishing guide? Been trying to search for it here on AR-15 but I couldn't find it.

Thanks again.
