8K for a 640 sensor is very spicy and as I said previously the AR functionality needs plenty of support both in terms of data delivery and other people using matching gear.  The absolute minimum you can get away with to work as a "hunting party" or SAR team e.g. where you can see members of your team and objectives/targets is for everyone to be kitted out with a Gotenna pro unit.  The minimum you can get away with if you want to use CivTak, is a gotenna pro X unit.  The pro x unit base station allows you to frequency map a location thereby allowing you to pick a frequency either free from interference or alternativley, if you need to minimise RF emission signatures, you can pick something in the noise.  Anyhow, its only onwards and upwards from there.  A large amount of the functionality of the ECOTI is in the AR side of the equation - so if you're not using it you are paying a lot for something you don't need.  This really is professional end user gear for users that work in a fully supported ecosystem (comms, data, support, SOPs).

Nontheless, good to see them in the market place for those that have that type of requirement..

is there a possibility of TNVC doing a side by side of a COTI and an E-COTI at various ranges/environments so potential buyers can see the difference? Something as simple as outline at 50,100,200 yards would be nice.

$8k price range cuts out a lot of people.

I would be sorely tempted to upgrade at $5k

The advantage of digital technology is that once the software infrastructure development costs have been invested it doesn’t really “cost” anything to include it, the physical hardware requirements to enable the AR are relatively minimal.

Given that the primary customers for this type of technology are government customers who want that functionality, the costs are essentially “sunk” during product development, given how small the commercial market for such a product is.

FWIW, we did briefly have discussions with Optics 1 about potentially developing a “dumb” version of the ECOTI, and it was quickly determined that not only would it not save much if any money, because it would require another software revision that needed to be proofed and tested, a new P/N developed and managed, writing a new manual, possible changes required to form factor and production, having to shut down and re-start production to transition between commercial and government production, amortized over a much smaller number of units sold, the price of a “dumb” ECOTI could end up being significantly higher than the standard ECOTI cost.

It quickly became clear that both the easiest and cheapest way for everyone, including the customer, was to simply divert “full-up” units from the normal government production line for commercial sales, even if most commercial customers were unlikely to use or need the AR capabilities.

Beyond that, while it might be an obscure consideration to non-Americans, there’s an important philosophical and ideological component to the fact that you have access to the full capabilities of the technology if you wanted to invest in the infrastructure and use it, even if you most likely never will.

Finally, for better or for worse, Optics 1 owns the patent and IP for any device that projects data (to include thermal imagery) into a night vision image intensifier in the U.S., so any similar device with similar capabilities would either need to be developed by Optics 1 themselves, or at very least, with their blessing and that of their parent company.

::shrug::

IMHO, the price is on par, if not on the low end for a military-grade 640x480 thermal device designed specifically for kinetic ground combat and provides a capability largely unavailable with any other device. If you don’t want or have a need for those capabilities maybe it’s not worth it for you, and that’s fine, we fielded the same questions about “why a SkeetIRx over a PTS-233–they’re both weapon mounted thermal devices that fundamentally allow you to do the same thing: shoot targets, whatever they may be.”

The answer is that some people want/need what the newest technology and capabilities the high end version offers and some don’t and/or aren’t willing to pay for it.

Luckily, with the availability of EOL AN/PAS-29A COTIs, there’s both a budget tier and a high end tier for clip-on Fusion devices available to U.S. consumers.

We have never promised that ECOTIs would be delivered before Christmas.

What I will say is that we have been and are trying to get them out as fast as possible and push the delivery schedule early, however every single order that was placed was quoted early-January (we are closed between Christmas and New Years).

We are still on track to deliver according to our original shipping quotes.

Dude, I am not calling you out.  I am genuinely interested to see if maybe some of us will be lucky and get an x-mas delivery that seemed like a stretch.

I didn't perceive it as a call-out, but this is how rumors spread out of control and then somehow become fact.

Just providing clarity to the "much rumored."

First ECOTI units have arrived! Units will be shipping soon to all who have per-ordered, we are a bit backed up with our staff taking a much needed holiday break last week but they're working incredible hard getting all the orders out.

We are so excited to bring the ECOTI's to the commercial market!
