| last time I checked it looked like $3500 was the cheapest for thermal. FLIRs scout line can be had for around half that now, anyone mess with it? |
|
Yes, the tech is dropping in cost quickly and a cost barrier was broken with the new Flir line.
I used a few of the new models at the Shot show and they are impressive. I can only imagine that this same time next year, things will be even better performing for cheaper than current. |

Anyone seen a Scout 640 III yet in person?
I had a LS-64 one of the first ones out before the XR LCD upgrade on later models. I'm considering buying a new Scout III 640 I wonder how much better the newer screen helps performance to your eye vs my old model? I have used the 35mm RS64 would it be similar to it? |
|
I was mainly wondering how the LCD looks to your eye size and clarity wise? I wonder how it compares to the RS64 35mm scope as I have used that model in the field so know how it looks/performs.
I had both a old model PS32 and LS64 very nice systems for the price my main dislike was the old style eye LCD was very small to view. I ended up selling them off and bought a couple 336 FLIR core systems using OLED's and have ran them for the last year and a half. For a 640 core price the Scout III kind of has me looking towards buying another FLIR scout for my gear bag. |

Have you taken it outside?
How far can you see and identify squirrels in trees? What distance are they blobs and you can see that there's something in a tree. Does it refresh fast enough to track a bunny or squirrel running across the ground? How far away can you identify larger animals like dogs, or deer? Any screenshots? |
|
I live in the city so distance testing will be tough. Have plenty of squirrels though. I will try to see how far I can spot them.
The LCD seems to be fine, very clear. I use it with a small 12v monitor so I am not starting through the eye piece the whole time. I will try to get out to my farm this weekend and test on some hogs, coyotes, and beavers. |

Here's a short video I took the other night with the Scout 640: Any way you could do a comparison between the Scout 3 320 and the 640? I am leaning toward the 320 mainly because of the wicked fast 60 hz refresh rate (plus the extra grand for the 640) but I would like to check out the differences if possible. |

i don't like the colorful options. What are they for? I can't see as much detail in the red screens. Obviously you have never used one before....as InstaAlert is awesome for detecting and picking out heat signatures. The InstaAlert is for fast scanning to pick up something for further investigation without wasting your brain power, especially in environmentally comprised conditions when thermals do not work very well. |

We don't currently have a Scout III 320 demo/rental unit on hand that I can use for a comparison, but I think it's certainly a possibility as we update the units in our rental pool. I purchased the 640 unit myself to use as a back-up spotter and I'm pretty happy with it, especially for the price. We do have a video of the Scout II 320 for reference:
I wouldn't get too hung up on the 30Hz vs. 60Hz refresh rates as a factor in deciding between the two units. 30Hz should be more than sufficient for the vast majority of applications. |

Ok, with the scout line, how big of a deal is it to not have user-serviceable batteries?
I am sort of a flashaholic and am quite familiar with lithium ion batteries and as good as they are, they still can and do go bad or eventually wear out. That was one reason that I am still kind of leaning toward the Pulsar line because of that, but I would like to stick to FLIR if possible. Those of you folks that have had your FLIR scout's for a while, what are your thoughts? |

PS-32 five years old, no problem. LS-64 four years old no problem. LS-XR two years old no problem. RS-64 three years old no problem. They get used virtually ever night of the year.

My first PS32 ( One of the first models ever shipped ) battery finally got to the point where it was only holding about a 75% charge after tons, tons, tons, years years and years in of use in the field. I contacted flir and sent it back less than a week later It was in the mail back to me. I opened the box and flir totally overhauled my unit to like new condition. The best customer service I have ever experienced. FLIR rocks period!
I moved away to another brand model viewer because I wanted a bigger LCD/OLED viewer screen and 30hz the last two years. It was tough because I would have liked to stay with a FLIR viewer in my price range. Now that the price has dropped on the scout 640 III and they added the bigger LCD screen I see myself coming back home to a FLIR veiwer myself. |
| Trust me I've spent a ton on 123a's the last two years! My viewer gets used way more than my thermal scope on a average night out. The internal rechargeable battery can be a blessing in disguise! I've been ordering 100 pack of 123a's at a time and with several thermals they go much faster than I would like. |
