Hey guys!

My dad recently bought and returned an ATN NV scope (I think the X-sight) because it didn't zero, it didn't hold its software settings, it was gimmicky/cheap, he couldn't keep up with all the updates, he didn't get along well operating it, and it just plain didn't work well.  It was his first time trying out NV and it left a bad taste in his mouth for sure.

I don't know much about NV scopes but I agreed to help him research for a reliable, simple NV scope.  He will be using it to put on his M4 upper for coyote hunting.  Magnification is preferred, but we are open-minded to any sort of setup that would be suitable for coyote hunting.  Would be open to buying used.

Your help is appreciated!

Photon XT.   I have one and use it 2-3 times a month.  Excellent scope for the money.

How much for a decent one?  And which one do you recommend?

it really depends.
most of us NV is an extension of BRD....
so,personally, its my second if not equal passion to guns.
If you are planning on using it every once and a while for your intended coyote hunting
i guess the photon xt isnt a bad choice.
Im not a fan of digital nv.
personally i would suggest a gen 3 unit. i prefer to have the option
of a helmet mounted unit, with the ability to weapon  mount the unit(think pvs14 type)
and a IR laser for targeting. so if you keep looking in the ee or with one of our industry site sponsors
good deals on gen 3 NV do present themselves often....
im sure that prolly dosent help you,but im looking at it thru my exp with nv.
i started with gen 1-wanted more, went to gen 2 and then quickly went to gen 3.
in retrospect,i should have saved and went with gen 3 from the get go....it would
have saved me a lot of money, headaches and time.
YMMV.

Take a look at the PVS-4 gen 2 scope.  They seem to start in the $750 to $1000 range for gen 2.  They are very durable and perform pretty good.

you can build a functional pvs14 for around 700. I still use my beater tube. and it blows the doors off any gen 1 stuff I've tried.

Housing 75.00
Battery housing 35.00 crazymedicmike in the EE
eye lens 150, he may still have a few anvis 9 that would work for 60
obj lens 125,
battery cap 15

skip the lock and focus rings for now... the light pipe, and tube retainer ring, for later. Save that money for a tube, and go with a mx10160 with some blemishes and you'll be dissapointed with any gen 1 getup forever. Then as you get 10 or 20 bucks here and there, then you can pick up those rings. Also there is the "how to build a PVS14 tutorial" on youtube that started it all for me thats fun to watch even after I've built a few.

I feel like I just introduced someone to crack... im sorry.

This is also true.  Even a horribly blemished Gen 2 or 3 tube is way better than most of the digital stuff out there.  Finding one for the right price is the only trick.
