I have an MTM insight that I bought used.  I believe it to be a Pas 23 but the manual really doesnt designate.  Name plate lists:

Insight Techology
Serial #
MTM-001-A3
Mnf  Mar 2009

So, a couple of questions.

Is it a Pas 23? Would there potentially be a firmware update or something else I should be updating.

Its my first thermal, so I really dont have a comparison on what to expect.  Overall I am happy with the unit but wonder how much difference the 640 units make?  Thoughts on what I have.

Thank you for the input

As far as I understand it  yes, that is a PAS-23, if it's not a MTM-V2 it's a PAS-23 (with IR or with visible laser). Are you asking if it has an IR laser or not? It's also not user update able. If it's an IR variant don't even think about sending it into Insight for repair ever.

Curious why you dont recomend sending it in for updating?

I am wanting a clip on that I can also use as a handheld for observation.  Trying to figure out it the image clarity/performance of a T70 would be significantly better or not.  The pricing you see seems all over - The unit I have is complete and in very good condition but I dont really know what it would be worth - been out of the NV game for a while.

All input is appreciated.

Because L3 restricts the IR version to military / LE only, if you're not sending it in with agency letter head they will confiscate it.  On a side note I don't know if there were any updates ever rolled out for it.

Its not that they would confiscate it (if its legally owned) its that they (like all manufactures) would not accept it without an RMA, and they will not issue individuals RMA's, only dealers/distributers.  You would most likely need to pay a vendor (if you bought it used) to do the middleman/brokerage for you.
But if its not broke, don't fix it.

PS- everything I heard was the only way you break 'em is put them on a gun (harnesses break from g's).  I would definitely not that do that.  Buy the WTM for that (has a reticle).
