Here's a link to a NOAA report on what's causing those lights you're seeing. The press conference begins at the 24 second point.   It's a very strong geomagnetic storm.  The sun's energy release is messing with HF and GPS, especially in higher latitudes.

It was amazing fireworks!

I was going out just stargazing with my monocular and on the way out wife asked if I was going to go to see the northern lights she heard about in the news. I hadn't even heard about it. I live in the urban area where not many stars can be seen even on the clearest nights, but I could spot the lights the moment I stepped out. I decided to hike a bit on the frozen snow to a nearby hill that has trees that would block some of the city glow and that was a very good decision to make.

It was the first time I saw northern lights through a NVD, and I was standing there my mouth open just staring up. I was straigh under a major "downpour of stardust" and I got to tell you I was stunned to see it. I had only my cell phone with me and the pics are crappy as hell, but at least you can see the amount of light there was. Look at the pics and try to imagine those blobs of light dancing around and raining down on you. I have never seen anything like that, and I don't know if I ever do again.

Not very south, I'm in Finland, couple of degrees south (between N62-N63) from the Arctic circle. Northern lights are annual but relatively rare occurance on our latitude. The event we witnessed was very strong, northern lights in that magnitude appear about once in every ten years.

Thanks for the photos and videos guys, it's neat to see the phenomenon though an image intensifier.

Jippo, nice sharp pictures, they are far from being "crappy".

thanks for sharing pics and video.

i guess the lights were much stronger over Finland,it seems that you guys had them right over your heads, while i saw
the "edge" of aurora,so to speak.

but anyway,lights were spectacular.

You guessed right, they were over us here. It was mesmerizing to stare at the figures and shapes that morph in the very center. I think it looks like that if you just happen to be anywhere where they are stronger, perspective makes it look like they are just above you. I remember seeing similar intensity northern lights around 15 years ago, but nowhere this long as now they lasted pretty much the whole night.
