Was there ever a Gen I MUM? I found this on a local craigslist ad and it says "1st gen ATN Mono" http://images.craigslist.org/00v0v_3CcNpelVumM_600x450.jpg I asked if there was any other labels on it. I don't think the image tubes are the same between Gen1 and Gen2 so I would say it was unlikely but you'll have to wait for the real experts on the board to answer up for a definitive answer. It's probably at least a Gen2 unit and after looking at the ad on craigslist I would grab it for that price. |

The housing is worth at least $500 if it's in decent condition, plus whatever tube it has inside of it. Seems like a bargain to me.. Especially if you are local and are able to inspect the NVM in person and check out its operation in a dark room. You might also be able to offer them less and see if they will go for it. You never know. |

The MUM eyepiece will unscrew off the back of the unit but care must be taken when screwing back together, the threads are very fine and can be stripped easily.
Turn the unit on and look through it to see the image. If it looks good to you, you are probably in the clear. Check to see if the unit whines when powered on - this is a "tell" if the unit is autogated or not. |

Thanks for the help. I tried some new batteries just for the hell of it and did not help. Probably the power supply like you mentioned.
If I was able to buy the housing for a few hundred, how much could I get a new tube for from a reputable vendor? Just curious...The On/Off switch also had an "R" position. What is that for? |

Figure $500 would be a fair market price for the housing, assuming it is complete and without issues, and doesn't include any extras.
$350 would put you in the bargain zone for sure! The "R" position is really "IR" or Infrared. The monocular has its own little infrared (invisible to the unaided eye) flashlight. You can turn the IR light on for use in total pitch black environments like basements or caves. |

Offer $300 in as-is condition, then immediately take it apart (or send it to me or someone else here) to see if there are any easily-correctable issues (maybe bent pins, or someone put the tube in out of alignment, corroded connectors, etc.
I've disassembled quite a few MUMs. It's very easy if you're reasonably careful, and no tools are needed. |
