Was there ever a Gen I MUM? I found this on a local craigslist ad and it says "1st gen ATN Mono"

I asked if there was any other labels on it.

I don't think the image tubes are the same between Gen1 and Gen2 so I would say it was unlikely but you'll have to wait for the real experts on the board to answer up for a definitive answer.  It's probably at least a Gen2 unit and after looking at the ad on craigslist I would grab it for that price.

Pretty sure Mums used 18mm 2nd and 3rd gen tubes and not gen1, also never heard of a ATN mum

ATN currently makes a MUM based NVM that comes with either a Gen2 or Gen3 tube in various flavors.

That's an actual MUM housing, not one of the ATN or similar semi-copies. If it works, it is either gen 2 or 3. Gen 3 would be more common.

And if it's a real Gen2 or Gen3 MUM then it's worth at least what they are asking for it.

maybe its got such a low gain on it that they think its a gen1

The housing is worth at least $500 if it's in decent condition, plus whatever tube it has inside of it.

Seems like a bargain to me..

Especially if you are local and are able to inspect the NVM in person and check out its operation in a dark room.  You might also be able to offer them less and see if they will go for it.  You never know.

The MUM is designed for Gen 3 tubes. A Gen 1 MUM is not possible without EXTREME modification. ATN could have a Gen 1 scope that looks similar but it won't be a real MUM.

I'm going to drive up and check it out. Assuming he wont let me open it up is there any way to know what tube is in it? If he does let me open it, is that dangerous for a novice such as myself? Is it easy to damage stuff?

The MUM eyepiece will unscrew off the back of the unit but care must be taken when screwing back together, the threads are very fine and can be stripped easily.

Turn the unit on and look through it to see the image. If it looks good to you, you are probably in the clear.

Check to see if the unit whines when powered on - this is a "tell" if the unit is autogated or not.

Switch it on and listen to see if it whines , when you turn it off if it keeps producing a picture for some time after switch off its a Gen1.

Have never heard of a MUM-14 in Gen1.

Best of luck with it.

I've never seen a gen1 mum, only 2+ and 3.

This turns on and i can hear it autogating. I can not see an image (even with a little light from the door) Dead tube? Is there anything i can try? Im in the store so any help would be greatly appreciated!

if it whines and there is no image then it might be the power supply that is shorting out inside and causing the whine = new tube needed

Thanks for the help. I tried some new batteries just for the hell of it and did not help. Probably the power supply like you mentioned.

If I was able to buy the housing for a few hundred, how much could I get a new tube for from a reputable vendor?

Just curious...The On/Off switch also had an "R" position. What is that for?
1/4/2015 5:12:54 PM EDT
[#17]
Figure $500 would be a fair market price for the housing, assuming it is complete and without issues, and doesn't include any extras.

$350 would put you in the bargain zone for sure!

The "R" position is really "IR" or Infrared. The monocular has its own little infrared (invisible to the unaided eye) flashlight. You can turn the IR light on for use in total pitch black environments like basements or caves.

[#18]
it would be IR but perhaps the I has worn off  , i think

Offer $300 in as-is condition, then immediately take it apart (or send it to me or someone else here) to see if there are any easily-correctable issues (maybe bent pins, or someone put the tube in out of alignment, corroded connectors, etc.

I've disassembled quite a few MUMs. It's very easy if you're reasonably careful, and no tools are needed.

Thanks Horta, will do!

It's almost impossible for that housing to hold a Gen1 tube -

If it's working, it's Gen2 or Gen3, and Gen2 is very unlikely also -

If it's just very low gain, then you can replace the tube and have a good monocular -

So benb, did you ever pick this MUM up?  I'm curious as to what tube was in it.
