Saw an interesting article. Not sure how much I buy into it.
Flir One - Pin Code Theft |
|
Quoted:
So What. you still need the card. Actually no brother. All you need is the information off the card which can easily be transferred to another card. That is why now merchants ask to see your card and enter the last 4 digits on their system. Just to make sure the card matches the info on the card. |
|
Quoted:
Too many journalists without enough training. gotta say, he was pretty slick with his photo taking skills while at the counter. Now deciphering 4 digits would be hard but not too hard, esp if you can somehow measure the temperature variance. The first number being the coldest and the last being the hottest. I am not sure if Flir One is able to do that! |
|
Quoted:
Have you tried this with a 5x Thor? You're missing the point. This has to do with a device which is inconspicuous. Holding a Thor 5x or any dedicated TWS over someone's shoulder could hardly be called inconspicuous. From the article: "The FLIR case for the iPhone looks like a normal iPhone case so even if you stuck around after your purchase, you would likely have no idea that someone was taking a thermal image of the keypad. You could be a witness to the thief swiping your PIN code and not even realize it was happening." |

True Dat! First he rents a Thermal Weapon Device from a friendly thermal internet website with an option to buy, then he takes said thermal down to the bank parking lot with his video recorder and records dozens of PIN #s from ATMs and then he charges the costs of his new thermals with the fraudulent data and then goes hunting.....what a life!

I hear they last longer that way. No charge for my "pro" tips. |

The whole using the FLIR ONE to skim Pin numbers is just sensationalist click bait. Which is fine - Dude makes a fair bit of money from ad revenue on Youtube if it goes viral. But even an idiot can figure out that you still need to have either the physical card, or atleast the data from the magnetic strip. The reality is if they are in a situation to be running a skimmer without you knowing it, they probably have an easier way to record your pin code.
In the real world? I'd be more worried about something along these lines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRDTIx6mu2E |

skypup, do you have any fir one sales figures? Rumor has it, its a flop esp with the new iphone coming out. Ha, the rumor itself was a flop with over >10,000 already sold, not to mention the new AX8 Lepton core for industrial process manufacturing is just coming online in a big way in modern manufacturing facilities, Flir is on a roll..... I-Phone 6 and Android models in time for Christmas too.... Soon Quark cores will be in TWS, No? |

|
Skypup likes Flir so much he most likely bought the first 10,000 himself. In truth Flir probably had most sold before they were even produced as they had a quite extensive waiting list I never bothered to sign up for. I almost never buy anything on the first release. I always wait until the second model when they work all the bugs out. Same thing with cars. I still want one and I would bet money they have something for the 6 in the works. |

lol Where is your proof about the 10K sales? Quoted:

BTW, where did you get that "flop" rumor from? A professional Internet keyboard commando delta operator? ![]() lol Where is your proof about the 10K sales? That is for me to know and for you to find out, besides you know I don't sell anything, I just buy it and use it! |

|
The Therm-App is much more powerful than the Lepton core and as such is more expensive, however FLIR has prototype 640 Quark cored FLIRONEs with both 19mm and 35mm lenses that would blow the Therm-App out of the water and allow detection out past 800 meters, but it will be much more expensive too, but the Quark runs on little amperage so probably make for a much more compact integrated battery setup.
Just wait and see what else is coming down the pike..... |

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gadgets/news/infrared-cameras-now-small-enough-to-be-in-your-phone-15827860 The new FLIR IPhone case makes use of the Quark camera core, a tiny 0.75” cube with great high thermal resolution and low power requirements. The FLIR Quark core is available in resolutions of 320 x 240 and 640 x 480, with a sensitivity of 0.05 ºC or 50 mK. The Quark can be configured with a wide variety of lenses, including 6.3mm, 9mm, 13mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, 25mm, and a 35mm telephoto lens. Frame rates vary from a full 60 Hz down to an export ready 7.5 Hz. With the 9mm lens and 640 x 480 resolution, the FLIRONE is able to detect a person at over 800 ft (250m). But with the available 35mm lens, the FLIRONE can see a person at over 3000 ft (940m), or a warm vehicle at over a mile and a half away.

Sounds like vaporware to me. |
