So I've been investigating options available to me for getting some night vision without dealing with the headaches of Department of State paperwork. Some of the exportable Gen 2's, 9hz thermal options, the stuff we all know is pretty much good to go. Not exactly any equipment I would be proud of but given what is available to me.
We all know of the FOM limitations on export tubes, and specifically to certain nations. 1600 FOM is where I would be sitting as a Canadian, and that is a very comfortable metric (25 SNR x 64 resolution). Certain items, like thermal scopes or IR lasers, just seem to be restricted without the same level of "These countries get this and these ones get this" distinction that FOM tubes get. Even then, I can't determine whether or not the 1600 FOM is meant for government purchases. I have spoke with a few different retails who are willing to submit the paperwork. Some sound fairly confident with the answer that it would be approved for civilian, personal use. Others were skeptical. The thing is the paperwork costs around 300 bucks, regardless of whether or not it gets approved. I'm certainly willing to put in the paperwork if there is a reasonable chance of it getting approved, but not if I am just going to throw away 300 dollars. Does anyone have any experience, knowledge, or hearsay about the Department of State permit process? Does anyone know if I submitted a permit to get the fun toys, such as a PVS-14, PVS-15, PVS-24, IR Laser, IR Hunter Scope, etc etc etc - will it get approved, or will I just be wasting a couple hundred bucks by making the attempt? Thanks for any and all information. |
| What is the name of the office? Perhaps one of us can call & get a probable answer? As in - oh yeah, the Canadians buy that crap all the time & we just have a rubber stamp - or - I've never seen that before, I'll have to call you back sometime before hell freezes over. |
