The info on the TNVC web page clearly states that it's not as powerful as what "war fighters" use... Is it worth the price?

I'm not war fighting but might use it on coyotes and hogs...

What's the consensus?

Here's what TNVC says about it: "While this is a lower output than the standard 5mW+ IR lasers used by Warfighters and LE Professionals, it is perfectly adequate for targeting at ranges out to 400-450 yards. This encompasses most ranges at which users will engage targets during night shooting and training."

Here's the thing, "what warfighters use" is not real practical for hunting. When we used PEQ-15's, we used the laser on the low setting for engaging targets. Hi is mainly just used for marking targets and other tasks besides shooting. Class one lasers are really more useful than restricted lasers for shooting as they wont bloom as bad.
What is an advantage on the 5mW units is the illuminator. Unless you are hunting with overhead air support from AH-64's, a class1 laser is plenty stout.

For a C1, 400-450 is really pushing it. The big advantage with CIII lasers is the availability of more options. That's about as simplistic as I can make it out to be. They're just better lasers. Get your hands on one if you can. If you can't, stick with the OTAL/ITAL. They will be adequate for your purposes, though I prefer to have more options. It's personal.

Once you go PEQ, you never go back.

.7mW will target as far as a normal human can reasonably aim a laser in rural areas.  If you want to make longer ranged shots >200Y on a regular basis you'd do better with a dedicated NV scope than with even a 5mW+ laser.

How were you able to paint targets for GBU's with PEQ type weapons lasers? Those things need some type of encoded pulse lasers such as the AVQ or AAQ target designators.

For hunting, range shooting, exploring, etc., .7mW is where it's at. With a laser capability of 400 yards that's FAR past a distance of being able to recognize anything with a PVS-14 on my head. And if I cant ID it, I'm certainly not shooting it.

Using it at longer range with light sources around.

Weak is not better, get both is better.

The class1s are great for hunting though.

Actually the 0.7mW IR laser is actually too strong for hunting, but putting a neutral density filter onto it will lower it down to about 0.1mW which is just perfect for pin-point accuracy.

If you really enjoy super bright large blooming IR lasers that cover three 300 pound sows at 100 yards and pulling the trigger and listening to the muzzle blast and walking out to where you missed your sow is cool, more power to ya....

If you want to see a precise dot on your 300 pound sow's ear at 175 yards and pull the trigger and she drops in her tracks, get a Class 1 Civilian legal laser and put a neutral density filter on it.

I'll echo Skypup's assessment, the class 1 ITAL that I have is way too powerful at .7mW for hunting, I ordered a ND filter for mine that I have to adapt somehow. Don't feel slighted a bit by a 'civy' laser.

Oh come now, it's not that difficult to understand. I'll try it again. HIGH POWER IR LASER haters gonna' hate. Your dislike for high power IR lasers is a common theme in this forum, and that's fine, we all have our opinions. But when your hate for them reaches the level that you're going to toss out statements such as "illegal military lasers", knowing damn well that there people in this forum who legally possess them, shit gets real, and it gets personal. Who needs Agent Wu to troll these forums, when there's people like you making unfounded accusations of illegal behavior or possession of stolen property. (And yes, that's what it was regardless of how thinly veiled you presented it.) If you want to paint a group or class of people with a broad brush and accuse them of being involved in illegal activities, do in in General Discussion so that it can rightly end up in the pit where it belongs.

Of course we know that, what is it your trying to say? In fact as you read more around here even the .7mW is too strong for close in work for hunting. (But will NOT damage a tube as one dealer in particular said on another forum who made some outlandish claims...We see that a lot over there. )

That is the PRIMARY reason we worked with LDI to get the LOW feature working on the DBAL I2, down to .2mW.  In fact, we begged LDI for YEARS to get a Class 1 even legalized, we knew years ago high power lasers were great for Lum, but not too keen for close in targeting. Funny part was, LDI was so caught off guard on the initial demand for the Class 1, it took them 4 months to catch up on our initial Class 1 orders three years ago at Shot.

Hope this helps

What about the explanation of how the illuminator mitigates the splash of the laser and makes it so you can see your target AND the laser?

It is good that Class 1 IR lasers are readily available to law abiding US citizens, and the effective range is consistent with PTI through a 1x mag Gen3 device in my experience..  The higher output devices also have appropriate applications, but it ain't hog or yote hunting at ~200m max.

My understanding is that come 2014, incandescent lightbulbs as low as 40W will be prohibited...... and we are debating IR lasers?
