I have a set of PVS-7's and I want to zero my IR laser (from the do it yourself thread) but I don't have anywhere to go that will let me shoot at night. Will I be ok with just using the pinhole cover on my PVS and doing it during the day?

Also, what exactly does the IR filter do when used on the PVS? Thanks.

PVS-7's don't have an IR filter??? They come with sacrificial lenses and LIFs. Neither is suitable for your purpose.

Zero-ing with the pinhole cap may not work ( too much ambient light, unless you're using a military laser ) - Try using a laser with visible and IR, then zero the visible during the day, and you can take it off and zero the IR to the visible at night, at your own pace, as long as you have somewhere to do it that won't bother anyone.

Regards

David

With the pin-hole cover the later in the evening after dusk, as late as they will let you shoot, the better.  Another option is to set the rifle in a rest after dark and place the aiming point of the sight you already have on the gun on a fixed object at your preferred zeroing distance.  Then without moving the rifle, adjust the IR laser to hit that same object.  You do not have to be looking through the optic with the PVS-7 to do this, just looking down range to see the laser.  The laser will them be zeroed to the same distance as your sight.  They will not have the same POI vs POA at other distances since the laser does not star out at the same height over bore as the sight and may very well be mounted under or to the side of the bore.

I guess I just want to know if my PVS-7 will be damaged if I use it during the day-time with the pin-hole cover. Or if there are other ways to mitigate any damage from doing so.

It is an IR only laser.

Well, it's not good for it. ABC capability is reduced and wear is increased.  Pinholes are more for dawn/dusk or just checking that the thing is on than anything else, and the sun is still very bright even through a pinhole.

Do you think I would be alright if I used an IR filter with a pinhole cover over that?

I couldn't see the laser with the pinhole cover on when I tried this exact thing with my DBAL-I2 and PVS14. This was at dusk. I talked to my range board and got permission to zero at night under supervision. It worked out great ("supervisors" were all my buddies on the board and they were kinda drunk when I got there. They did not shoot, I did.). They are going to work an NVG sight in night "event" for later in the year when it gets dark early enough. Also they want me to help run it and write an article for the club newsletter. Can't hurt to ask.

They were impressed when I shot a 1" group of 5 shots at 100 yards using the laser. I put a 1" square of 3M reflective tape on the X, and it would glint very brightly when the laser was perfectly on it, just had to aim until it was very bright and squeeze off the shot. Hell, even I was impressed. Now to get on a hog. I am waiting for the weather to cool off a bit. I don't like hunting in the heat much.

I described above how to zero the IR laser at night with no shots fired and no range needed.

Do you have a NV compatible aimpoint or eotech sighted in already?

I alreasy zeroed the laser sight to my Aimpoint. Still want to double check with some live rounds. Also want to put some rounds downrange withit

So tentative plan for zeroing is installing an IR filter over the OL, and then putting on the pinhole cover. If I quickly zero the laser (should really just be confirming the zero since it is zeroed to the optic) I think it should be alright. Only issue I can think of is the daylight making the laser wash out from my view.

Why aren't you just bore sighting it with the proper target on a wall inside? It's not really meant to be used for pinpoint accuracy.

It's more of wanting go shoot some rounds with it during the day. Not to many places around here to shoot at night.
