I just spend about 2 hours reading archive posts on NV in the community section and am more confused than when I started.  I have been looking at getting a simple NV scope for a while for hog and predator night hunting.  I have committed to spend the cash to get a decent one so Gen 2+ is my starting point.  I was looking at the Armasight Nemesis 4x Gen 2+ Improved Definition scope and it seems to be a great choice; especially because it has 45-64 lp/mm, the same line pairs resolution as Gen 3.  Of course it won't capture as much light as a Gen 3 but for hunting (and a go to rifle in a SHTF situation) it seems sufficient.  Of course I'd love to get a Gen 3 but $1,500 - $2,000 is really my limit.

Reading all the posts got extremely confusing with regards to tubes and MCP and other components.  Do companies like Armasight, ATN, Pulsar, etc actually produce new NV tubes or are they using old milspec surplus tubes to build their scopes?  If they are using 'old' tubes, how do you know what tube it is?  It looks like Gen 2+ could be anything from an OMNI I to an OMNI III.  I could be so ass-backwards right now that I am not even making sense.  All I know for sure is that I definitely don't know enough about NV to build anything myself and while I am researching and learning, I'd rather buy a complete sight than try to buy individual components.

I guess my biggest question would be when buying a 'new' scope from someone like Armasight or any other scope manufacturer, like the Nemesis 4x or 6x in Gen 2+ I'm looking at, what EXACTLY am I getting?

Did you consider an M845?
I do not see them on the TNVC site any longer but see link below for some archived info.
They were Gen 2 and fit your budget. You might be able to pick a used on for cheap.

Here is an old link to TNVC with specs of the, there was another one that offered ~2.5x

Sorry but I personally can't offer info on any of the other companies or scopes that you mentioned.

A cheap scope... I just had a look at Optics Planet... $1400? Not bad for Gen2.

OK, there are no specs, so I would expect sub-Omni I performance, but that is not a bad thing if you don't need passive and it will outperform Gen1 by a HUGE margin. The resolution claims are interesting and it's great if they achieve it - keep in mind though that resolution is something that's supposed to be measured at starlight levels and there's no specs to see how it performs.

But generally, if you add extra IR light, you should get a good image and a lot of range out of it.  So a decent illuminator is a MUST and will cost a few hundred extra.

What are you getting? At that resolution, you're getting a fairly new tube, and almost certainly a russian tube. Some of the recent Russian tubes are getting pretty good though.

Optics Planet - you're on this forum at times - Any chance of posting some tube specs?

Thanks

David

I assumed 2+ with 'Improved Definition' might be at least referring to High-Perf Gen2 so I was hoping it was at least an Omni 2 or 3...

All of their Gen 2 and up scopes include a long range IR illuminator which is a plus i suppose... or it means that they NEED it for decent image resolution.

This is my biggest concern.  This is my first time buying NV and I don't like the uncertainty of 'guessing' what I am buying.  They list their brands and it lists L3 and ITT but it also lists Photonis...

I would love to know exactly what tubes come on these scopes.  From the research I have done since the OP, I have pretty much determined two things; 1. I need to raise my budget or forget about NV all together as buying the lower end is a waste and 2. I am not buying anything with knowing precisely what tube is in the optic.

We covered these scopes in this thread (which started as a clip on night vision thread) Spec Sheet for Armasight and more info on the tube type

As far as I know, nobody has ever done a field review or come back to give there impressions as to whether the specs on paper relate to performance in real use.
