Is it normal to see fixed pattern noise (hexagonal patterning) in Gen 3 tubes in high light situations?  I was using an ITT PVS-14 in doors and noticed the hexagonal pattern pretty clearly when I lit up a nearby wall with a Surefire M1.  The image through the tube is crystal clear under normal low light or outdoor use with illuminator.  Is this normal?

Fixed-Pattern Noise (FPN)

A faint hexagonal (honeycomb) pattern throughout the image area that most often occurs under high-light conditions. This pattern is inherent in the structure of the microchannel plate and can be seen in virtually all Gen 2 and Gen 3 systems if the light level is high enough.

Yes, it's normal. It's also a very good indicator that the situation is too bright for your monocular - so where practical avoid use extended under such conditions.

It probably won't damage it, but it will decrease it's usable lifetime.

When it is too bright like that you need to put the rubber cap over the objective lens and use the tiny peephole....
