I have an M845 scope from TNVC that I plan to use for coyote hunting. I plan to use this on a 20 inch barrel.  My concern with the additional IR from the torch is was out from the flash from the shot.    I have a vortex flash hider on the rifle now but also have an XM-177 flash hider laying around.  Since length is not a concern and the bi-pod will take up the extra front end weight, will the Xm-177 flash hider do a better job of eliminating muzzle flash for this use?

I know the Xm-177 FH isn't as good as the Vortex but at the end of a 20 inch barrel my thought is that it would help burn up all the powder inside the tube before hitting the vents.

.....or am I over thinking this?  I have both Flash hiders laying around so putting on either one is no problem.

Ammo will usually be 55gr M193 of some sort since i try to keep my shots under 300 yards at night.

20 inch barrel is goanna let that powder burn up nicely, where a 16inch carbine would produce a mellon sized flash of burning powder.   I would think the xm177 would not be a prob if used IMO....

If you can get a can for that or any gun, that is the way to go.

As for your current setup with the (Smith Enterprises?) Vortex, you should be just fine.

Thanks.  A can is something I am looking into for all the obvious reasons.

Always good to deal with TNVC.

Ruh Roh!  See if you guys can help me out.  Have Pvs 14 inbound from Vic. Shooting a 16" .223/5.56 with stock flash hider.  I'd take a pic but I 'm no good at the interweb and don't know how to post pics.  Anyway, looking at my flash hider, it has 5 "slots" that are spaced evenly from the 12 oclock position down to the 4 oclock and 8 oclock positions on either side.

What's gonna happen when I shoot on monday night ?  I'm using .223 FMJ 55 gr. to shoot pigs with. Will my pvs 14 bloom and shut off?   Do I need different flash hider before I shoot?  Will I damage my PVS with current set-up?

I think I read that .223 wont have as big of a fireball as 5.56 but I'm kinda in the dark here....Get it?....    In the dark!!!!!!

The military uses A2 FS with 14.5 inch barrels. They are supported with replacement tubes & 14's but if it were a real problem the flash suppressors would have been all changed long ago.. you will be ok with A1 or A2.   getting a Vortex or newer flash suppressor to remove any chance of harm to your 14 is what most seem to do anyway + a vortex improves the looks of your weapon...    ––-ETA––-  had my coffee  so lets go deeper into the question.  your unit may black out for a split second with each shot, but that's normal (a built in safeguard).  A vortex will greatly eliminate the flash, giving you an advantage in other ways such as stealth (not really needed if your not hunting 2 legged creatures that shoot back)  M193 & M855 is loaded hotter than 223.  Pick up a better suppressor when you get a chance, shop around, its an easy fix.  enjoy your new hog setup

Here is a good comparison of the A2, Vortex, and Blackout.

They don't specify what NOD is being used unfortunately.

Ammo selection makes a big difference.

Wolf = beach ball size flames.
American Eagle = baseball size flames.

Some the higher end defensive ammo actually have some stuff added to lower the flash signature.  I believe the milspec 5.56 is the same as well.  True milspec 5.56, not the commercial stuff (although some commercial stuff may have it).
