Asked about this in the sights category but didn't get a single reply.  Anyone here with first hand experience?  What did you think?

no user experience here but wanted one ever sense I laid eyes on it - would love one in class 1   but that looks to not be in the works from what Insight has said...

What class is the laser on it currently and why would class 1 be better?

Class 3. Class 1 would be better due to the grey-market restricted nature of the Class 3 units.

Class 1 IR or visible?  Their ISM-V has co-aligned red dot and visible laser but they quit making them.  What would be the difference b/n a class 1 and class 3 IR laser?

I would assume since you asked about the IR variant we were discussing class 1 IR lasers. Historically IR lasers such as the ISM-IR, PEQ-15, PEQ-2, DBAL-A2, Vital-2, etc... have been classified by the FDA as Class 3 and restricted to gov sales only, as they were all over 5mw. The FDA a little over a year ago has allowed the sales of IR lasers under 1mw to civilians. Hence the recent sales of lasers such as the DBAL-I2, DBAL-D2, OTAL/ITAL-IR, Class 1 EOLAD, and Class 1 Uni-IR.

Systemofadown is saying he wishes Insight was making a Class 1 IR (and hence civilian sales legal) version of the ISM-IV. However, insight has stated on several occasions they have no plans to release Class 1 IR lasers to the civilian market.

Power of the laser.  Presently any IR laser 1mW or stronger is restricted for sale to the commercial market.

The monkey wrench is some of the Vital units that have been .7mW along with PAQ-4C's...

POWER  its a peq-15 with a built in aim point style sighting system.  Class 3b is a restricted item, no civvy sales or ownership....

The EOLAD isn't your thing? From what I've read the ISM series isn't any more highly regarded than the EoTech. Not that anyone actually uses them

Agreed, the eotech sux   na, I've been brought over to the light side now - if I buy another IR laser/iluminator package its gonna be a DBAL D2 from the looks of things. Still would like the addition of an aiming device(feel like you really got your money's worth but its not really that useful in the long run.   After loosing the 15 I give up on full power units

Gotcha.  Wasn't aware that the FDA governed that arena.  Aren't the everyday laser pointers more that 1mW?  Seems like Insight, now L3, would be removing themselves from the larger playing field as I don't see the mil too interested in this sight when they have Aimpoints, Eotechs and PEQ's.  I see civi sales as a larger market for some reason.  So then, if a civi wants to upgrade his technology from a NV scope to hunt hogs lets say, is getting a hold of sn IR laser out of the question right now?  Thought this would be a good optic to acquire for such a use combined with a PVS14.

Visible lasers can be above 1mw. Agent Wu will get you if you speak of those evil IR lasers that put out much more. Tragically, mine was lost during a fishing outing. Very sad and lots of tears. Seriously, the civvy version works fine and if you get to powerful they just bloom your scope and are useless.

Long range ? Yup, the Agent Wu lasers will reach out and touch you but most don't need to shoot 1000 meters. I don't, but YMMV.  The biggest advantage to the milspec IR lasers IMHO is the ability to illuminate objects and scan at very long ranges. They excel at that !
