Quoted: I have a D740, if you were thinking about another rifle scope a step up from the D740 what would you get thanks for any imput It depends on the use. The D740 with a Gen3 is pretty good as quality goes, so I assume it's not meeting your needs in terms of use? You won't get much better in the way of dedicated until a dedicated 8x scope comes out, although you could go the D760 for a little more magnification. You could also go front-mounted clip on if you want day/night capability. Or maybe a thermal weaponsight? I guess it really depends on what you want to do, but unless you have a dud or a bad tube, the D740 should be up there with the best of them - Regards David

The D740 works great, I just had alittle extra money and wanted to build a second NV rifle, I like the D760 just wanted to know if there was any other options? thanks for imput Raptor or the like. They are better scopes but cost a good bit more. I think durability is really the main advantage. That does cost you in weight though. Raptors are pretty heavy. |

It depends on the size of the target, the range and the conditions of shooting as to what is best. Clip On's weaknesses are a breakdown of the image due to the apparent loss of resolution and MTF as magnification of the scope increases over about 3x, meaning that a dedicated 6x or higher will provide about four times the image quality. Important when needing to recognize what you're shooting at over a distance. Thermals are great for finding animals in long grass but not very good for identification at all. Raptors are the next logical step up from the D7x0 but are heavier and don't really offer much of an improved shooting experience, but do provide a far more robust platform that is more tolerant of abuse or accident. So the application is a rather important factor in determining what's needed - Regards David |
