| What are the options out there for small clip-on NVD's? I've seen the KAC UNS-SR, and the CNVD. How is the performance of these out to 500ish yards? With the CNVD, can you remove the shroud in the back to shorten it up a little. Any other small clip-ons I should be aware of? I'm looking for a small, lightweight to run on a 1-4x equipped carbine. Any comparisons between e little guys? |

The FLIR (OmniTech) TaNS (Tactical Night Sight) is another option. http://www.gs.flir.com/products/soldiersolutions/TANS.cfm
With that type of distance you want to engage will take a bit more magnification out of your day scope. PVS-22 (UNS) might be in order unless you plan on using a lot of IR light down range with the smaller clip-ons since you're gonna have to crank up the mags to see that far. |

500y in the dark with a small device (or even a big heavy one) is a substantially challenging combination particularly dependent on environment and objective.....at least you didn't ask for cheap as well.
What is your direct experience with other high end NV systems at extended distance as a basis for comparison? |

I really like the L3 cnvd (pvs-24) small, light and the focus adjustment is just KICK ASS in my opinion. Like murderman says, shooting 500 yards with NV is no easy feat. Conditions will play a crucial role in the ability to shoot that far. If only running a 1-4x optic I would look hard at the 24. And yes you can remove the rear piece.

Thus far my experience shooting out at distance has been pot shots with a PVS-14 and a PEQ at pretty big targets at about 350 yards. Probably minute of barn door success rate, and obviously beyond the real range of my gear now. It was definitely nothing serious and more of a "hey look at how cool this stuff is." I figured a clip-on would have to be an order of magnitude better, but maybe my expectations are out of line.
I'm just looking for something that will allow me to use a magnified optic (maybe even a NF2.5-20 instead of a 1-4) for a little more precision at medium range. After reconsideration I think 500 is probably farther than I would shoot, 300 is more likely. Ideally I'm just looking for something that will still perform ok and have a little mobility. It would get used for helping some rancher buddies with coyotes so it would be nice to have something a little lightweight that could be packed up. Other than that just fun trips at night to show off some cool toys. I've never used a clip-on before so aside from knowing they're not cheap and can't be home built easily, my knowledge base ends pretty much there. I've just seen the smaller ones like the CNVD on Vic's website and the KAC one and thought maybe they'd fit the bill better than a PVS-22 since both the KAC and CNVD mention 4x ACOGs and the larger ones are typically in use with magnified precision rifles. For close up shots the PVS and PEQ would probably still be optimal. |

Here is something to consider:
UNS-SR - 20oz. D-930 - 24oz. PVS-24 - 27oz. PVS-22 - 30oz. PVS-27 - 50oz. PLUS TA31F - 14oz. TA11F - 18oz. Leupy 3.5-10x50 - 22oz. NF 3.5-15x56 - 38oz. OR D-740 - 38oz. Where the clip-ons shine is for use on multiple hosts or at higher magnification. If 4x mag is sufficient, and one only intends to use one or two hosts, a dedicated riflescope is a pretty attractive solution from a technical perspective and is substantially less expensive. Just a thought. |

In my opinion the PVS24 is the best for weight/size vs performance. I have seen the PVS 24 work at 7x with a NXS 2.5x10x32, where the UNS SR was good to 5x.
I also believe that the clip on's advantages outweighs, what is lost in image quality (when compared to a fixed power NVD) The ability to use multiple hosts and variable magnification is huge advantage when shooting/scanning. |

Between a good measure of success with a PVS and PEQ-15 the other night, and the desire to spend the good part of the summer in Thailand causing some shenanigans I think I can do a good bit of damage to the asshole coyote problem with the gear I have, it just means I have to call a bit more. I'm still interested in picking up a lightweight clip-on at some point and I appreciate all the information, I'll just hold off on doing anything with it for a while. That is of course unless someone wants to send me something for some coyote slaying T&E |
