Was the intended function of the hole in all daylight caps whether on monocular, goggles or weapons scope to equalize temperature, thus allowing the lens to breath, preventing fogging and the like.

Not really, it's more intended to check the function of the device during daylight hours. In the case of some scopes like the PVS-4, it's intended to allow limited use during the day or to scope in and in more recent military models, it's intended to reduce the aperture, taking the load off the autogating tube ( these are very big holes )




I'm sure it helps a little to change the temperature, but very few are hermetically sealed and most cases are aluminium, allowing good thermal coupling between the outside and inside termperature in any event.
