So I searched and there is 1 thread from 2009. Will/Can TSA take this thing away from me? The gun will get checked but the NV will be carried on. The only hesitation I have is that its a 740 with QD mount, so unlike other NV items, I can't just say its a lens for a camera.

Any experiences?

Honestly I would photograph the case right as you give it to the TSA folks or ask that you be present when they inspect it and keep the NV scope in there with the rifle.

We've posted this a few times...As most know, we fly a lot with NV and always bring on units with carry on bags.  The best advice is to always take the batteries out and declare you have some very expensive optics and to handle with care. We've had enough oos and ahs when the TSA foklks pulled out a D-760 or Raptor scope and see their eyes.  They are mostly intrigued by the systems and ask a few questions but there is NOTHING that prohibits the units from being carried on unless of course your attempting an overseas flight! Just a reminder you cannot take Gen 3 units out of the country period unless prior State Dept. approval with paperwork, they they CAN and WILL take the unit away. I.e. some Russian gal not too long ago in the news attempted this.  Also, X-rays will NOT hurt your NODS.  Hope this helps.

I had a friend that just flew in town with a BNS,UNS-SR,BNVD, and other NVDs in a carry on bag. The TSA asked a lot of questions, and held him up, but he got here with all his stuff.

I fly with NV in my carry-on all the time.  Never had a problem.

Any reason for carrying this as opposed to checking it other than the possibility of lost luggage?

At first I thought this thread was about flying with NVGs. Like, piloting.

In Iraq I was in a C130 and got to use the pilot's NV binoculars. Insane. 5,000 feet up in the middle of an Iraqi night over Al Anbar and you could see farms with herds of sheep at ground level. Absolutely freaking nuts. Where can I get some of those?!?! :)

Under no circumstances should you ever check your NV kit.  Keep in mind that baggage handlers do not make much money and there are millions of dollars worth of stolen items and lost luggage reported every year.  On top of that, there is the possibility of damage to the gear.  Have you ever seen how baggage handlers throw around luggage?  Let's not forget all the abuse it takes before it even gets to the tarmac.
