| I was given a FLIR camera for work and would be lying if I said I haven't taken it hog hunting several times now. It's not a scope but rather a camera and I can tell the difference b/n pigs and calves at 500 yards. Our pig hunting routine has changed dramatically. Instead of waiting quietly for hours until we hear or see the pigs, we drink beer and crack jokes while watching them root around the pasture at over 1000 yards before coming to the cattle feed pins. The camera is a FLIR b60 and has incredible sharpness. You can see mice running across the field, birds sleeping in trees; it's really neat technology that I would love to have weapon mountable! |

All right. Been very busy lately but i got some so so photos. Don't have the model where the pictures can be taken with the unit so I've been trying to hold a camera up to the back of the unit which kinda sorta works but doesn't portray the full effect at all. Need to get a camera with an AV hookup so I can take advantage of the AV out cord on the FLIR.
The following pictures were taken at night when the temperature was 87 following a 101 degree day. Its a deer out in 10-12 inch corn stubble. http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1662-1.jpg thought its cool that you can see the levels in oil and gas tanks. http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1671-1.jpg http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1664-1.jpg http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1666-1.jpg http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1673.jpg http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1676-2-1.jpg These were taken during the middle of the day when the temperature was 102 http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1683-1.jpg http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1679-1.jpg http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/thermal/101_1685-1.jpg I'd say my eye is not yet trained to distinguish between cows/calves and pigs and deer at long range. Right now inside of 300-350 yards and I can be 100% positive. I can pick up objects from very far away. The other night I could tell there was a pack of something in a cut hay field from around 2/3 mile down the road. Needed to get closer though to tell they were deer. The H-series blows away my pvs-14 the 3x magnifier for spotting but the pvs-14 is still needed for the approach. and since this is the NV board I'll give a little tribute. http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/Hog%20Hunting/106_1548.jpg http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/Hog%20Hunting/106_1610.jpg http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/_Ironman6_/Hog%20Hunting/106_1630.jpg questions? |

did you get the 307 model? has a tighter FOV than the 324, right?
They've come down in price in just a few months already. Started at $8k I see one on ebay for $7k NIB. Probably be in the $6k range by Christmas. Not the 324, that has a much wider fov and not as suitable for spotting animals is the impression I got from the videos on the FLIR site. |

Not the 324, that has a much wider fov and not as suitable for spotting animals is the impression I got from the videos on the FLIR site The difference in price is probably comparing the patrol model vs the command model. Most sites have the patrol model at a little over 7k. The command is 8k. The 307 also has a 65mm lens compared to a 19mm lens in the 324. That video that jagerpro has really shows a great comparison of the two's image quality while viewing hogs. The 324 with the 2x mag doesn't look near as clear as the 307. |

the distance to the deer was probably in the 250 yard range but that's really just a guess. Last night I climbed up on one of those oil tank ladders to look around and I spotted a coon down the road that I measured with my car as 0.3 miles away. If you can look at a dark background (hill, ground, etc) instead of a treeline for a background (warm) you can pick up animals from amazing distances away. I've found that right now the black hot setting is actually better for spotting than the white hot.
and yes that is the 307. If you're thinking about getting the 324(with doubler) I'd highly suggest waiting and getting the 307 unless your normal/max ranges your planning on using it for is in the 400-500 yard range. The 307 lens is completely different than the 324 doubler. and the night vision pictures were taken in order: pvs-14 pvs-14 with 3x lens D-760 gen 2 the last 2 pictures are of the same hog. |

Talked to FLIR rep this morning. The Scout model is basically identical to the H series (what you have) except the refresh rate is 9hz vs. 30hz. Picture a slow lag or delay as you're panning from right to left. Otherwise they're identical.
Also, Scout series will be 30% lower cost than H series, which puts the high end model (H-307 equivalent) in the $5k range, which means $4k street. Comes out in October. I know what I'm asking for Santa this xmas.. |

Had a chance to go out with Ironman6 a couple of nights ago to whack some hogs. LOL... If you saw how much gear we had in the back of his truck you would all laugh. Lets just say we could of taken on a third world country.. I had my unit that I got from Karma to compare it to while hunting. The 307 has more range and detail, of course due to a 320 sensor and the 7 deg field of view. Both units performed very well in my opinion even under the poor conditions. If I was hunting large crop fields like Ironman does, the 307 is definitely the unit. If your hunting areas where scanning 500 yards and in, the 2500 works very well. I've been told when conditions cool off the range will be increased quite a bit, so I can't wait till the temps start to drop. Thanks again Scott for the hunt! Oh and next time lets turn in a little earlier. The last group of hogs we got on the sun was coming up. |

As for the FLIR unit- the narrow FOV units are getting good reviews. I am hearing the price floating around on these units - can anyone share the costs? |

Sorry,
HS-307 Patrol 65mm H-Series Handheld Thermal Camera 320x240 FPA resolution with 7° x 5° FOV, Hot Shoe Charging & Video Output Attachment, 4 Rechargeable AA Batteries, AC Power Adapter/Charger, Car Adapter/Charger, Neck Lanyard, Manual, USB Cable, Video Output Cable. Hope this helps. |

How would you compare it to the TAM-14?
In my opinion it blows the tam away.( not sure of fov of tam unit I viewed) However, the tam can be used as a weapon sight and the 307 can't. Just depends on what you want out of the unit. If you want a unit for just detecting targets then going to a NV weapon sight I would take the 307. Of course I have limited time behind the two units. I'm sure Vic can give a better opinion of the two units and their performance. |

Just emailed IT to unblock arfcom on my work computer. What a day! |

Get him to buy a thermal weapons scope under the premise that it is just a thermal camera and then make arrangements to take it home on weekends |

No scope, but I am thinking small, handheld monocle. Something like that should not be left around the office or in a crew truck. I will need to keep close track of it unless it is in the field in actual use We have an existing HUGE camera that runs about 15 minutes on a battery the size of a riding lawnmower battery. Shopping is gonna get fun on this one, |
