I'm new to NV and recently purchased a new PVS14.  I've noticed that when I use it I can see faint very rapid pinpoints of light that remind me of camera flashes at a concert.  Occasionally one of these flashes will be very bright compared to the others.  Is this normal or could I possibly have a defective unit?

Its normal. Its 'noise' The higher S/N ratio you have the less of this you will have. Its most noticeable in very dark environments, when there are less photons to convert to electrons.

Does it look like fairly uniform static or is it very pronounced pulses so to speak?

The static is pretty evenly distributed and isn't a distraction most of the time.  My main concern is the very bright flashes from time to time.

Thanks

As the posters above say it is normal. The "noise" will get worse the darker the environment is in which you use the scope. All Gen 3 tubes will do this if it gets dark enough. If you take it in a dark room with no light all you will see is the "noise". Nothing to worry about.
