Anyone have any experience with the ATN Generation 1 night vision scopes? Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks, |
| Unless you are getting a SMOKING DEAL (ie. <$100) and you can function test it before getting it or it has a good return policy, don't bother. For less than $100 sure why not, try it out. If you are looking for a riflescope and can't afford gen2 prices, over $1k usually, maybe try a PVS-2. They are old mil surplus from the 60's but MUCH MUCH better than any gen1 that ATN or whoever else will sell you. They weigh over 6lb and are quite large, but other than that they are great. What role are you looking for the night vision to fill, that will go a long way toward figuring out what you want/need. |

Save your money, this will work much better for you and is far cheaper. |

Gen1 is slightly better than Gen0 for most use and provides some capability to work at night - especially with IR torches or illuminators. It's not so much an ATN issue as it's just a GEN1 issue. Gen1 can be worth a few hundred and can be useful for a lot of things, especially if you're on a tight budget, but it lacks gain, meaning you already need enough light to see in order to get any good use from it. | It has been my experience in talking to folks who bought Gen1 that almost all of them regretted it. They had an idea of what NV should look like from seeing it on TV and figured that it would be close to that, but maybe not as bright. Gen1 lacks the ability to resolve detail and and has no gain. It tends to have a bit of a fisheye warp to the image and does not reach out very far. It is usually a waste of money and targets those who have cash burning a hole in their pocket. The sad thing is, it is not supported by the manufacturer and is usually sold in "as is" condition. When people buy it, they are almost always disappointed and cannot return it. Then, they have blown a couple hundred bucks on junk, when they could have saved their money for something good. On top of that, they usually have a hard time selling it. |
