I found a great deal on a Streamlight TLR-2, it's now bottom mounted to a railed gas block. Primary use will be flashlight, but eventually used as aiming for a helmet mounted NVG. Any thoughts on the best range to zero it at? I was considering 100 yards, but I am quite open to thoughts and discussions on how far out to zero it.
You might try 50 yards instead of 100 if your going to be helmet mounted with no magnification. I use my laser for close encounters, or if hogs come running by not giving me enough time to get on them with the 760. I have my laser sighted in at 50 yards and the 760 at 100 yards. Of course this is my personal preference, and has worked well for me while hunting.
How does the laser work out for the close encounters? Do the hogs react to it? How about other critters such as coyotes, coons skunks etc. I have one I'm trying out and rabbits don't even seem to notice it unless I hit them in the eye with it. I haven't had a chance yet to try it on anything else.
The way I was always taught was a 200yd zero. The reason is because the rifle has a 50yd zero. 50yd zeros are dead nuts at 50 and 200 yards. They have the least amount of deviation on the flight path between distances for normal threat engagements and require the least difference in holds based on the bullet drop A laser is different, though. It does not drop over distance, and continues in a straight line. So, if you zero it at 50 or 100 yards, your point of impact is going to fall off very quickly from your point of aim and you will end up with ridiculous holds at distances past that. I do not tend to think lasers are good pinpoint aiming devices at distances past 200yds anyway, so this zero tends to be the most versatile.
Thats my problem, the 50/200 set-up only works if the laser is mounted above the bore of the weapon. You get the "double" zero crossing the balistic path twice. My set-up is laser below bore. It will cross the bullets path only once. Should I be thinking more CQB style and go 60 or under, or more of a midrange and go somewhere around 100?
