I believe products like that are not available to the general public.

There are a whole bunch of things you can use a thermal imager for, and they certainly aren't limited to military and law enforcement.  Most dealers seem to restrict sale of thermal weapon sights, but there are a lot of FLIR units that are made for non-military applications.

These pictures come from the Fluke Corporation web site (those people who make volt meters and stuff).

As far as I know, ITAR regulations still apply to these units.

Specifically FLIR, I have no idea.  If in general you are referring to thermal imaging weapons sights, they are available from TNVC, a sponsor of this board and moderater of this thread.

What good is it outside of a combat zone?  That's argueable.  I'm sure some deer hunters would tell you they would have been able to follow the deer trail if they'd had thermal.  I know that some folks use them to hunt wild boar at night.  A lot of people would be pushy enough to say that we don't have any reason to have an AR-15 style rifle outside of military or police.  I don't think "what is it's use outside of a certain situation?" is a legit question.  I think a more legitimate question is why should anyone be able to tell me what kind of optics I can own, if I can afford them and want them?

Edit:  And just in case, yes, I have ordered a TAM-14 thermal imaging scope from TNVC.  I don't have it yet, but will absolutely play with it and report back what I find out at some later date.

Here are a few FLIR images I have taken.  I have more that I will post later.  A few are of a DI AR15 after 2 mag dumps.  It is interesting to hear the Piston vs DI argument and be able to look at what actual parts of the AR get hot and what parts don't.  And yes, that is doggie poo.
